Any of these driving games any good?

by Jim » Sat, 10 Mar 2001 02:03:38

Hi all, I was wandering around in Game today (a shop in Cambridge, UK) and
they've got all this lot at what seem to be good prices. I'd appreciate your
opinions on these games (both good and bad) because I'd like another driving
game but don't know what to get! Thanks :0)

F1CS2k 30
GP3 30
F1 World Grand Prix 10
Warm-Up! 10
Merc Benz Truck Racing 17
4x4 Evo 15
Insane 17
Ford Racing 10
Ford Racing 2000 10
London Racer 10
Spirit of Speed 1937 10

I already have GPL, but for reference it's 10 and they have several copies.
They also had Nelson Piquet's GP game, Johnny Herbert's GP game, a bunch of
different versions of Test Drive and (I think) a copy of V-Rally 2. Don't
know prices for these though.

Quite fancy Ford Racing 2000, but I know nothing about this game apart from
what it says on the box...

Thanks!
Jim

I can almost imagine the responses you'll get with such a generalized
question :are they any good?".  Some people will say that GPL is really bad
while others will say GPL is the king of all PC racing Sims.  It's not that
any one of these people are right or wrong, it's that everyone has their own
opinion on what makes a good racing game.  Do they want something that they
can win races at every time they play?  do they want to work hard as they
can and only have a slight chance at winning? do they even care about wining
races but rather race the Sim for the learning experience?  and the list
goes on.  Only you can say what is a good game and what is not.  Your best
bet is to download a demo of each game off the net and try them to see if it
fits what you are looking for.  If you want someone else's opinion, you'll
get just that,  "someone else's opinion".  Everyone is different and that
includes you.

I know this isn't much help with your question, but it is the only answer
there can be without getting politics involved.

Have fun on the track,
Mike Barlow

Good point Mike,

But, of that list, I think it's safe to say only F1CS2k, GP3, MBTR and
Insane are fully rounded games/simulations. Of those F1CS2k has a
prohibitive hardware requirement and MBTR, though possibly the best sim in
there, simulates a series which is possibly a bit obscure for most people.
So you're left with "bordering on the arcadish", but immenently playable
off-road action in Insane and F1 racing in GP3, which is very configurable
for both hardware and ability and has a lot of 3rd party stuff floating
about the internet for it.

Perhaps Jim can look a bit more thoroughly and also unearth NFS:PU and
SBK2001. Which would narrow our choise to 6 games one probably can't go
wrong with.

Of course, should the store have a copy of GPL left... ;-))

Perhaps a little expensive, considering it can be bought for 19$ US almost
everywhere

Get F1CS2k or F1RC before that.

Everything here is NOT a good buy if you want any kind of realism except
Mercedes-Benz Truck Racing, which is a steal at that price.

I've seen some of those games cheaper in EB.  (GP3, 14.99, F1CS2k 14.99)

DO NOT PURCHASE Spirit of Speed 1937!  (or 4x4 Evo)

Insane is a good game, lots of fun online.  Merc Benz Truck racing is a
good un too, although you do need a monster system to run it well

personally, i wouldn't get London Racer, or Ford Racing series, as they
look to be more *games*, rather than simulations (but if thats what you
want, then go ahead!)

but you must buy Merc Benz Truck Racing!

ok thanks folks :0)

I'm downloading some demos at the moment, starting with F1CS2k and MBTR. I
tried them both at Christmas on a mate's computer, but only with keyboard
controls, so I still don't *really* know what they're like. Anyone tried
either of these two on a PII-450? I'm currently on a TNT2 M64 but the plan
is to upgrade to a GF2 GTS when my pay cheque comes through in 2 weeks
time.....

Are there any decent saloon car sims, by the way? As in, titles that at
least *some* of you enjoy, no need for an argument about the relative
goodness of various titles :0) I'm looking for games at the GPL end of the
spectrum, rather than the Woody Woodpecker Racing end of things, if you're
with me :0)

cheers,
Jim

I always found the TOCA series to be a bit arcade-like but if you want good
sim racing with a roof then Sports Car GT is a great buy (it's around
CAN$20).  Grab a few essential patches - patch v 1.551 and the Advanced
Options (physics) Editor - and it's not a bad sim.  The physics aren't GPL
and the graphics aren't state of the art but they're still pretty good.

Sports Car GT.   Not structly speaking a saloon car game, but the sport cars
handle pretty similar.  It's a very good game.  Also take a look at Viper
Racing.  Both these should be pretty cheap by now.

well, he can't be that away from the truck series because Steve PARRISH
lives in Cambridge, and PI the telemetry guys are there too.
