NASCAR 2002: Anti-Cheat Tools...

by Pauly Milu » Sat, 05 Oct 2002 11:00:56

Hello:

Im new to NASCAR 2002, but it seems that cheating is a problem.  Also a problem is all the
alleged efforts on preventing it.   This post will help serve as a discussion as intended about
the anti-cheating efforts.   Based on my investigation for the last 2 weeks using a robot to
scan websites, discussion boards and talk to people there seems to be some.  Im looking forward
to racing with you all and this will put my mind at ease!

1).    Replay Analyzer Method

After discussions and email with the man that wrote NASCAR REPLAY ANALYZER
that help believe he has the only scanning replay analyzer and he said:  There is no
way to use the data reliably in the replay to prove that anyone is cheating.  Although the host
server may contain more information, there still isn't reliable data..  So that sort of rules out
the NASCAR 2002 REPLAY ANALYZER Version 2.0.  Now if you have any information
and want to share it.  Let it be said based on first hand knowledge..!

2).    Mike Baker, Client Anti-Cheating Tools.

I dont have good information as Mike is not available currently.   Its my understanding that
he can detect a number of cheats like "New_Tires.exe".   There are others.   Now how easy
it might be to circumvent this software im not sure..  I might get a server from them and test it.
But they state that it is very good and Baker does good work!

3).   PAPYRUS SERVER RESIDENT MONITOR SNIFFER!

The 3rd method is a product being used at www.nprl.org.   Also by is sister
operation www.nprlbdivision.com and they are kicking out alleged cheaters.  The say this
can detect cheating..   Now they also say they are working with Sierra and Papyrus.  I find
that hard to believe as if PAPYRUS doesn't have budget to do a patch they surely cant be
developing this resident sniffer server software that looks at the memory of the server while
in operation.    If they have this information its in violation of both EULA.TXT and possible
if they are working with an X Sierra employee his or hers company non disclosure
agreements.    I contacted both the sierra and papyrus and they deny they have any
software or have developed any software.  Now NRPL says they will release the software
within hours.  This shouldnt be a problem and great contribution to the sim racing world.

Papyrus has a dont ask, dont tell , dont say policy on enforcing EULA so should be just
fine.  The software output i was sent as part of my investigation has output but
no where does it mention PAPRYUS/SIERRA but another company.  It seems premature
that NPRL would be banning racers on software that is 3 days old.   Must be very confident
that the software is BUG and LOGIC Free..  I hope it does work we need all the help we
can get...

The purpose of this is to discuss these methods.   Please dont post any garbage so the
thread will be short and have meaniful methods. If you know of other projects and efforts
please reply.

My only question is why are you so worried about cheating?  If I felt people
I raced against would cheat, then I wouldn't race them.

And Papy releasing software for anti-cheating methods??  Don't believe
everything you hear.  Especially form a Dega league website.
ROFL!!!!!!!!

Ok, so how do people cheat?  I've heard this in N4 races as well, yet no
one will say what it is cheaters do?  Do they given themselves really
incredible horsepower?  Tires that are really sticky, but last all
race?  Missiles?

to make a long story short.  The game has no memory protection against writes.  So one can write a program
to write back into NASCAR 2002.  that means if something is changing like a varaible related to a physics
calculation as part of the game it can be hacked.   This has been the way with NASCAR for last 7 years.
Things like tires, gas, and even setups of fixed setups.  Game downloads the fixed setup.. the hack can
change stuff and you run with 70 tape and even one else at 40 tape..

NASCAR 2002: Anti-Cheat Tools...

by Tom Osbo » Sun, 06 Oct 2002 02:06:22

It's a real simple fix, race with people you know. I believe that the vast majority of leagues have rosters of good drivers who don't cheat and have no need to. If you suspect you are racing with cheaters, then find another group to race with and be careful not to confuse really good drivers with cheaters because there are some guys that are just plain awesome.
