EA Nascar and DirectX

by BRH » Mon, 24 Jan 2005 02:55:39

Downloaded the EA Nascar demo, and installation said that I needed to
upgrade to DirectX9.0C.  I downloaded it from the site specified in that
message (microsoft's website), but when I try installing Direct X 9.0c,
I get a pop-up message saying that it's incompatible with XP and the
install won't complete.  I re-downloaded the file and the same thing
happens.

I recently ran through all of the XP tweaks at this site --
http://www.racesimcentral.net/
recommended in a RAS post dated 1/12/05 titled (little bit OT:
Optimizing XP".  <The tweaks are very worthwhile BTW>.

This resulted in my disabling several XP services that were on by
default, so I figure that having one of those set to off may be the
culprit for this failure to now install DirectX.

Does anyone have any idea whether this is the case?  If so, what do I
need to turn back on?  Or is there something else that I can try?

Thanks!

I believe you have to use Windows Update to get the latest DirectX for XP.

I'm _sure_ there is a developer redistributable somewhere though.

The readme says it will be on the final Cd.

Thanks Larry, but that wasn't it.  I had "Cryptographics Services"
disabled.  Therefore, XP couldn't check the "signature" of the file.
After activating that service, I was able to install DirectX with no
problem.  Just goes to show you that tweaking XP can sometimes lead to
unexpected results.

Now, I'm ready to install the EA demo.

Thanks again.

I assure you I would have NEVER thought of that :)

Oh, I'm sure that you would have if you just finished tweaking XP
yesterday like I did (and took copious notes).  8)
