: Has Papyrus and Sierra given up on the sim and any future projects? Is
: NROS ever going to get off the ground? Looks like NASCAR has shifted gears
: and has made a license agreement with EA that gives them the interactive
: rights to NASCAR.
: Say it ain't so!

I am not sure what is meant by "interactive rights". It sounds like they
are really beginning to "split hairs" when it comes to licensing. CART
sold the "console" rights to Sony and apparently the "computer" rights
to Microsoft. Now we have "interactive" rights. As far as I know,
Papyrus has never had "exclusive" anything rights. They just "license"
their product. With that said I thought there were some really
illuminating stuff in the press release.
"NASCAR 98 will feature 17 tracks, including numerous licensed
races/tracks from NASCAR's premier division, the NASCAR Winston Cup
Series. Included in the 17 tracks are nine road and eight oval courses.
Users can choose to race as any one of 24 driver/car combinations."
This is supposed to be a NASCAR "sim"? When did NASCAR ever race more
road circuits than ovals? When did they ever have 9 road circuits?
Have they even raced that many in their history?
"A split screen feature allows for competitive head-to-head racing,
along with six computer cars to round out the field. In single player
mode there are 23 other computer cars in the race."
Racing against 7 opponents. Sounds realistic! Even 23 is about 1/2 the
field in N2.
"Adding to NASCAR 98's realism, in-game play-by-play is provided by the
voice of ESPN commentator Bob Jenkins."
Yeh, every NASCAR driver races to the commentary of Bob Jenkins!
"NASCAR 98 features an optional weather setting so users can race in
fog, which is the only type of climate aberration that races can run
under on the real circuit."
So when was the last time they raced in fog? I guess wind and track
tempature are not climate aberrations?
"Everything from the music in the game, to the sponsors on cars, to the
exact specifications of the various tracks have been meticulously
reproduced to give game players as authentic of a NASCAR experience as
possible."
So now we know Jeff Gordon's secret. It's the music he listens to while
he races that determins how well he does. I bet you he listens to
gospel music on the days he wins. Probably listens to that sinful Rock
'n Roll when he loses. ;-)
Sorry, but I am not looking forward to purchasing this gem.
