Viper Racing patch

Viper Racing patch

I can't get the VR 1.1 patch installation to work. It runs fine about
50% of the way, then it aborts saying "The file race.bin is not an
upgradeable version".

Has anyone here experienced the same problem?

I'm having exactly the same problem, but since version 1.0 works fine I
didn't really pay any attention to it. It would be nice to have a
solution though.

I had the same problem with Viper Racing bought from Finland.
I emailed Sierra (USA) and got the following response.  I don't
know if it works.  Propably there is no patch for the european
"version" of VR.

Hello,

First I am not sure the patch you have obtained will work correctly with the
European Version of the game at this time.  I do not know if they have
actually written a International Update for the game or not?  You will wish
to check with Sierra Tech Support in Europe for information about any
updates.

With this said here is what I would like you to try doing to the game to get
the patch to install.

1) Uninstall the game completely
2) Find your Viper Racing directory on your hard drive and delete it.
Note: the default directory for most Sierra Products is C:\SIERRA and in
this case it would be Viper Racing.
3) Run a thorough Scan Disk and Defrag on your system
4) Reboot the system once this is done.
5) Now install the game on a fresh install
6) Once the game is installed and the system rebooted, then install the
patch update
7) Reboot one more time and you should be ready to play

Please let us know if you need further assistance with your issues?  Please
make sure to attach all original e-mails in case another Technician handles
your problems.

Thank you
David/Sierra Tech Support

The Viper Racing patch doesn't install correctly.  I get error
message saying, that some .bin file is not valid.  I tried to update freshly
installed european (Finland) version of Viper Racing.

Hi, Johan.

Ill take this in English for the rest.

I had this problem before you with paching Viper racing, and finally
after moore than one week Sierra gave me this URL:
http://www.shadows.com/nascar

This is where you should go and download a special pach for Viper to
version 1.1.

This problem came like a suprise for them. For sure.
I use to think Viper was a great game but all irritated and
stupid answers from the Sierra people during this, really made me in a
bad mode.

Well, there you have this special patch anyway.
Good luck

I copied the race.bin off of the CD due to my system having the 'beta' Viper
patch previously installed....

Worked fine for me after I did that...

The Viper Racing patch is only for the US version of the program. I
have one (courtesy of Sierra/MGI) that will should work with the
European versions (and US versions installed via install workarounds
on non US English systems) You can get this at
http://www.shadows.com/nascar/. To use this alternate patch, unzip the
race.exe file into your Viper Racing/Data directory (allow it to
overwrite the existing one) then run the program from  the race.exe
file.  Then you'll be running Viper.1.1.

I tried the same trick to no avail....   :-(
...and I hadn't even installed a beta patch. So it seems that
race.bin on my CD isn't the proper version. I live in Europe
so I suppose I might have a European version of the game. I
did try the supposedly European version of the patch (a rehacked
race.exe I found out about on Sierra Motorsports site), but
that one dumps me back to the desktop after the intro movie.

Sigh....

Viper Racing enthusiasts,

right click on the Viper Racing icon, click properties, version tab,
& add this to the  "target" line: "-nointro"
without the quotation marks. this will disable the introduction movie.

Talladega Greg

P.S. adding "-nocanary" will allow play without CD, in the U.S. Ver.,
it's all I know about.
