Arrrhh...Darn Computer keeps freezing....

by Dave St.Ong » Sun, 07 May 2000 04:00:00

Recently, I purchased the Soundblaster Live! X-Gamer soundcard, and now my
computer keeps crashing.  I even took the computer in and got the card
installed for me, and they deleted all info from my onboard soundcard
(Crystal), and after about an hour, the thing just freezes up.  It only does
it when I'm playing games, not if I'm doing anything else.  I have Liveware
3.0 and the most recent drivers for the soundcard, and I even downloaded the
most recent drivers for my Voodoo 3 2000 videocard.  Everything I check
under Device Manager shows everything is working properly, and is showing no
conflicts.  I haven't had any freezing problems before installing the
soundcard, and I am really at a loss....any help would be greatly
appreciated....

Make sure you turn of the AudioHQ thing which is part of the SB Live
software... look for a small icon left of the time on the explorer bar and
turn off AudioHQ...

Actually, I disabled that from the start menu, because it was taking too
long to load...thanks for the tip though...

Are you running it in Win2000?  The drivers aren't stable yet.

Heheh... "Arrrhh."  You sound like I did about four days ago.  Only
for me it was more like "ARRRRRRRRRRRRG!!"

Sounds like it could be an IRQ conflict.  I was having similar trouble
with crashes, and I discovered that my SB Live! and my GeForce were
both on IRQ 11.

To check it out, go to Control Panel > System > Device Manager.  Find
your SB Live! - it should be under "sound, video and game
controllers."  Double click on it and then select the resources tab
and it will tell you the Interrupt Request.  Now do the same for your
video card, network card, and any other devices you have installed.
Make sure nothing else uses the same IRQ as the sound card, especially
not your video card.  Also make sure the Crystel device driver is
either not installed (not listed) or disabled if they are listed.  You
can disable it by viewing its properties and checking the disable box.

If you find that another device is using the same IRQ, I suggest
moving the soundcard to another PCI slot.  Kinda sucks that you paid
to have it installed if you're only going to move it now, but this
worked for me.  It also caused havok for me, but I discovered later
that the problem was I needed to install a special driver for my
chipset, so that won't likely happen to you.

Well, I was really frustrated earlier in the week, especially since I also
bought the Cambridge DTT 2500's to go with the soundcard, so I have quite an
investment, especially with how expensive things are here in Canada.  That
said, I am using Win 98, and I went and checked all of the IRQ's and have
noted them below....

Voodoo 3 2000                                 11 IRQ
Sb Live                                               10 IRQ
SB Emulation                                        5 IRQ
Network Adaptor for Ethernet Card    9 IRQ
Universal Serial Bus Controller           9 IRQ
For the Bus controller, the info is Intel 82371AB/ EB pci to usb Universal
Host controller

Offhand the only one that I can see is the USB and the network adaptor,
although I'm not sure whether these two actually affect each other,
especially since they were like this, I assume, since the Ethernet card was
installed for me two months ago.  The freezing only started since the new
soundcard was installed.

Another person mentioned that the soundcard could possibly be overheating.
I have the video card in the top slot, then an open slot, soundcard, open
slot, then network card.  Is it possible to attach a fan to the soundcard,
and maybe that might make a difference??

Once again, thanks for all the tips.  At the very least, I am learning
something, and hopefully I can eventually solve the problem...

Just a FYI, that "SB emulation" is only relevant if you play dos-based
games.  The SBLive! default installation loads something at startup (can't
recall what anymore, sorry, check msconfig) that slows everything down and
hogs that IRQ.  You can remove all of that if you aren't planning to play
anything which requires a restart in MS-DOS mode.  It never hurts to have a
little more in the way of resources.

When I brought the computer in to install the soundcard, they disabled the
onboard soundcard, and deleted all the drivers from the onboard card...at
the rate things are going, I'm very close to returning the card and the
speakers, and getting my money back...

When does it freeze up exactly?  During all games, or just some?  You
are using Windows '95/98/2000 or NT?

It's impossible to help without more info.

I had much the same problem you are having, but I had an onboard
Soundblaster 16 (on the motherboard) and I purchased the SB Live! Value. I
recieved frequent crashes and I found out a solution. I had to disable the
Soundblaster 16 in the BIOS (because it was on the motherboard, my bios is
AMI-American Megatrends) as well as uninstalling the drivers. Works great
now!

Good luck

I meant that it slowed down the bootup process of the computer, not the
computer operation.  No matter the speed, you can better use IRQ 5 for
something else if you don't need it for DOS mode SB16 emulation.

What we're all saying is kill the real mode (autoexec.bat) driver the
install program most likely created. Make sure you are using the latest
drivers from Creative, and check for individual game patches with SB Live
fixes...

Hard locks usually have a hardware component, though. Make sure BIOS
Shadowing and Video Shadowing are not turned on in the BIOS while you
recheck to make sure the onboard audio has been fully disabled.
