I think in a way that it's easier to make a historic sim (flight or
racing) because so much data is availabe. I also like Nascar 4 for
the wheel-to-wheel racing, altho admittedly ovals are kinda boring and
it's not a lot of fun lugging around a stockar on a road course. I
always have a "3rd racing sim" of choice that I have installed. It's
varied over the past year or two but lately it's been either Rally
Masters, Rally Championship 2000, or Dirt Track Racing, all of which
have huge flaws I don't really need to go into detail on. Currently
I'm in RC2000 mode, at least until Rally Trophy is released next week,
and I'm finding that while I'm driving a shoebox at least I'm doing it
on interesting and challenging roads.
I enjoyed F1 2001 for a few weeks, but really nothing about it stood
above GPL, partially because I only have a passing interest in
post-1994 F1 but also because I find the overall experience to be
less-than-satisfying. I think it's easily the best modern F1 game,
but there are so many little things I can't stand. ISI engines always
have the most aliased graphics I've seen in any game at 1280x1024x32.
Driving on flat chicane-ridden tracks is hard enough, but it's damn
near impossible when it looks like the world is made out of legos (on
the other hand, the cars are drop-dead gorgeous). The handling just
seems off in a lot of areas, and coupled with the split axis
controller issues and completely unintuitive controller configuration
(why can't everyone just have a Linear/Non-Linear slider, for the love
of god) makes the driving aspect really unenjoyable. It frustrates me
to no end that you can just slam the brakes down all the way without
suffering any sort of penalty. Or that you can literally slide
sideways all the way around the track. I know I'm not a good enough
driver to do insane 4-wheel drifts at every corner and yet in F1 2001
I'm doing it with ease (this also bugs me about every rally game
that's been put out, with the possible exception of Rally Trophy and
that's just based on the demo). While I'm sure a modern F1 car is
much easier to drive than a classic car without aero, I have a hard
time believing that it would be easier to catch a tailslide, unless
they've devised some way to make aero work when you're sideways. The
handling overall is good, but I'd put it somewhere around Rally
Masters in terms of realism (come to think of it, they both have awful
controller support too). Basically, F1 2001 is a good game but it's
lost out to GPL/N4 in the realism dept (which is my primary interest
when it comes to simulations) and RC2000 in my personal interest dept
(since I much prefer rally to any circuit driving).
Sorry if I sounded overly harsh in my previous post.
