Why No F12001 GT Mod Discussion?

by jason moy » Sat, 12 Jan 2002 21:55:46

Well, it varies depending on my mood, really.  I always like GPL, but
I think in a way that it's easier to make a historic sim (flight or
racing) because so much data is availabe.  I also like Nascar 4 for
the wheel-to-wheel racing, altho admittedly ovals are kinda boring and
it's not a lot of fun lugging around a stockar on a road course.  I
always have a "3rd racing sim" of choice that I have installed.  It's
varied over the past year or two but lately it's been either Rally
Masters, Rally Championship 2000, or Dirt Track Racing, all of which
have huge flaws I don't really need to go into detail on.  Currently
I'm in RC2000 mode, at least until Rally Trophy is released next week,
and I'm finding that while I'm driving a shoebox at least I'm doing it
on interesting and challenging roads.

I enjoyed F1 2001 for a few weeks, but really nothing about it stood
above GPL, partially because I only have a passing interest in
post-1994 F1 but also because I find the overall experience to be
less-than-satisfying.  I think it's easily the best modern F1 game,
but there are so many little things I can't stand.  ISI engines always
have the most aliased graphics I've seen in any game at 1280x1024x32.
Driving on flat chicane-ridden tracks is hard enough, but it's damn
near impossible when it looks like the world is made out of legos (on
the other hand, the cars are drop-dead gorgeous).  The handling just
seems off in a lot of areas, and coupled with the split axis
controller issues and completely unintuitive controller configuration
(why can't everyone just have a Linear/Non-Linear slider, for the love
of god) makes the driving aspect really unenjoyable.  It frustrates me
to no end that you can just slam the brakes down all the way without
suffering any sort of penalty.  Or that you can literally slide
sideways all the way around the track.  I know I'm not a good enough
driver to do insane 4-wheel drifts at every corner and yet in F1 2001
I'm doing it with ease (this also bugs me about every rally game
that's been put out, with the possible exception of Rally Trophy and
that's just based on the demo).  While I'm sure a modern F1 car is
much easier to drive than a classic car without aero, I have a hard
time believing that it would be easier to catch a tailslide, unless
they've devised some way to make aero work when you're sideways.  The
handling overall is good, but I'd put it somewhere around Rally
Masters in terms of realism (come to think of it, they both have awful
controller support too).  Basically, F1 2001 is a good game but it's
lost out to GPL/N4 in the realism dept (which is my primary interest
when it comes to simulations) and RC2000 in my personal interest dept
(since I much prefer rally to any circuit driving).

Sorry if I sounded overly harsh in my previous post.

Maybe it's because driving the pacecar wasn't a pleasure anyway. Your
view is (too) restricted, and there is no right mirror. I found it
very annoying. And of course, this mod doesn't improve the online part
of F1 2001.

Sure.

david,

i downloaded and installed it.  i was quite impressed by it, but its
clearly still incomplete, as you mention.

the fact that it has arrived so soon (relatively speaking) after the
release of f1 2001 bodes well for future mods and expansions.

i hope that this is the beginning of the next Nascar Heat style of mod
making.  after seeing my SCGT install grow from < 200meg to > 700meg,
i am e***d by the possibilities of more and more mods for f1 2001.

playing the GT mod is fun, but i'm more e***d about its future than
its current state.

and, about your GPL lament.  I guess people would rather talk about
the games they play than the games they've given up playing.  i've
pretty much stopped playing f1rc for now and only gpl and f1 2001 get
any attention these days.

back to the mod, though.  i hope that other mods follow the same
standard of installing.  e.g.  a season folder, save folder and ini
file.  it would be useful for swapping them out.

so heres hoping for the Le Mans, Touring Cars, Rally cars, Gran
Turismo 3 mods for F1 2001 :)

Regards all,
istoff

I think an awful lot of internet users flat out don't know how to use
anything but a browser.  I have even met people who think that they have
to open their browser to connect to the internet, and are afraid to
close it when playing games for fear they will get disconnected.  Usenet
is an unknown thing to them.  Hmm, maybe that's a good thing.  ;o)

I've mentioned before on this newsgroup that I think F12001 needs some
tweaking. This review at simbin sums it up for me.
http://www.simbin.com/cgi-bin/ikonboard.cgi?s=3c3b041a4243ffff;act=ST...
=20 It certainly seems to have attracted many of the top GPL drivers though,
FWIW.

More evidence I guess (unfortunately) that DGF basically just wanted to
throw this line in this thread.  It was the only thing he had in mind, a
place to plug that line.

I installed it and actually was rather disappointed, I think I'll stck with
the regular game. Now thats awesome.
I tried other mods in NH while some were ok just too many flaws that ruined
the immersion for me. Just my .02.

IMO, I think thats is a very true statement
