GPL- full still only have letter box format?

by Destroy - Derek Stru » Fri, 02 Oct 1998 04:00:00

I have both GPL demos and was thinking about buying the full but... I
absolutely hate the 16x9 screen format in the demo.

Does the full allow full screen usage like all other games?
thanks

 Derek,
The full version runs in widescreen letterbox format, just like
movies were meant to be seen. Not the 4x3 aspect ratio that is the ban of
film lovers the world over. The new high definition TV's will all also be
16x9 aspect ratio, so in this case Papy is just way ahead of all the
mundane software developers. I like the format alot and it obviously
helps the framerate. I think of it as a stopgap measure until all of our
monitors are 16x9 too. Sony make one, but it's pretty darn pricey. This
too shall change, and I'd expect in the next couple of years all the
monitors sold will be 16x9 aspect ratio.
    All the best, Mike

Wide format TVs, yes, but I hadn't heard about wide-screen format for pc's.
Maybe digital TV's will promote convergence of tv and monitors(?).
I think wide format would be a poor format for laptops.

Ok... read this carefully...

Take the***pit, and put at the complete bottom of your monitor with your
adjustments.. Now imagine yourself what unnecessary things you would have in
all the black spot that covers 40% of the screen above... Sky

Just plain boring sky.

So if you want it full screen, take a blue paper and stick it on the high
part of it, to cover the sky (err black part) ;-D

And that's hog for the FPS (not big but still is !)

No :(   This really bothered me at first, (so much so I was going to
return it)  however, after you play the game for a bit, you don't
notice it near as much.  I'm still not sure why they did it though.

and bottom of my screen. Sorry GPL, I almost bought you.

Hmmm. so you won't buy GPL simply because it doesn't use 100% of the
screen? doesn't that strike you as a bit feeble? :)
Ok, consider this: what would you put into the extra space that is
there at teh moment? more sky? why? why waste time drawing more sky?
more***pit? why? we already see a hell of a lot of***pit. no need
to waste time drawing more.
Imagine you're wearing a helmet - they restrict your upper and lower
vision in a similar manner. Pretend it's just another element of
realism in that regard.

cheerio,
Grant.

I hadn't thought of that.  The sensation of speed is outstanding
though, so it the letter box mode does affect that, it might be worth
it. :-)

I still think you should at least try it!  (if I can over come the
letter box, I think most everyone can) <G>   (i'm insanely picky about
stupid stuff like that)   If you have an EB local, (they take returns)
give it a try for a few days, there is so much to like about this sim,
that the letter box mode doesn't become an issue. (IMO of course)

Heh, this has got to be the stupidest reason not to buy GPL.
I bet he just couldn't handle the cars and made up some reason :-)

I bought GPL and played it for a day before I came to the ng to see
what the curmudgeons had to say about it. I read all the stuff about
the "letterbox" screen and didn't remember seeing it on my computer.
So, I went back to the sim and got in the car and discovered: "Wow.
I do have the letterbox screen." But, I was too busy having fun to
notice before.
This is the greatest driving sim EVER and I'm not going to let a
little detail like not having a full sky view ruin it for me.

Superior? Thats a personal preference I would think. I would agree
with you if my monitor was that way expensive Sony 16x9 (the only one
of its kind that I know of)  but on current monitors its just a waste
of screen and immersion.

Well thank you for the insult. I just dont see this screen format
making any sense right now. Why couldnt they have simply made it an
option??? Would that have been so hard for the game maker to do?

I'm not a hard core sim person and yes the demos are challanging but
it seems fun. I just dont like limited views. Some things just rub me
wrong thats all and I hoped that it was simply a demo limitation but
its not. :(

This is all kinda silly, this
wide-screen,tall/short/skinny-screen??<g>).

The only good reason to black-out the top/bottom screen was to
increase frame-rate (which it surely can use).
