Actually, the main reason to have a wide-screen view is to increase the
'sense of speed'. One's impression of speed comes largely due to the
movement of objects in one's 'peripheral vision'. In most driving sims this
is hard to recreate as the***pit view is essentially straight ahead. When
I got the GPL demo I thought the letterbox view was c**% until I realised
what it enabled them to do. Essentially, running with the letter box mode
allows them to include far more detail out to the side of the car in
relation to the 'straight-ahead view' which, when moving, increases the
percieved sense of speed. Now, I don't know about you but I'd gladly put up
with almost anything that gives me the impression that I'm really driving
fast. What's the point in looking down at the speedo to see you're supposed
to be doing 180 mph but it feels like 40?
Now if only I could afford one of those panoramic Sony monitors to go with
this thing... :-)
