GPL and Glide 2.56

I installed the new (5/8/99) 3dfx reference drivers (titled Quake III
compatible :-) for my V2, ran a short race with the AI and it worked great!
Increased fps, smoother graphics and not one lockup or mouse trail. Only
time will tell but with glide 2.54 I locked up within minutes. 2.56 looks
promising.

Yup, I've noticed the same thing myself...

Thanks for the tip David. I installed them yesterday, and it looks
good so far.
But I still get frequent lockups in the "Player Info" menu.

After installing the new Banshee 3Dfx reference drivers,  I tried GPL
with the new drivers, using just the drivers, and then with the
'Banshee fix'  (alias glide wrapper).

The native drivers showed some strange textures -  ie: wierd billboard
thingys protruding onto track just before the underpass a Monza,  and
a noticeable slowdown in frame rate.

Putting the glide wrapper back in, everything cleared up and works
just great.

Can you provide more detail about your system specs, and what the
framerate improvement was (IOW, how many fps would you say you
gained)?  I just now tried these drivers and really didn't see any
framerate difference vs. the latest Diamond drivers.

My system specs are:
PII 300 (Dell Dimension XPS D300)
128MB RAM
Diamond MX300 soundcard with Diamond drivers "release 1.02"

Diamond drivers
        (ver. m3dii207-9X.exe, dated 03/24/99)
Matrox Millennium II AGP videocard with latest drivers
        (ver. w9x_433.exe, dated 03/15/99)
PDPI L4 digital gamecard w/ lastest drivers
        (ver. 1.41, dated 10/13/98)
TSW wheel/pedals on dual brake/throttle axis
Win95 OSR2 with DirectX 6 (dx6eng.exe)

BTW, with the above configuration I have not seen any lockups at any
point in GPL.

TIA

Hi Dave,
First off I'm not sure your current drivers are equipped with glide version
2.56 but I could be wrong. Anyway, I usually test my fps starting in the
back of a 14 opponent field. Using this config and the previous 3dfx ref.
drivers (with glide 2.53 in GPL directory) my fps were 17-19 at the start.
With current ref. drivers (glide 2.56) the fps usually stay out of the
***s. Numbers aside, there is less start stutter with 2.56 on my system.
Sounds like you were one of the lucky few that experienced no lockups with
2.54.
