GPL Racing Companion manual, page 16, paragraph 2 <g>.

In a nutshell, full left (Linear) will make your controller
equally sensitive throughout it's range of movement.... while
full right (Non-Linear) will make you controller fairly dead near
center but increasingly senstive as you continue to deflect the
controller.

Use something to the left of the center for a wheel, and I guess
something to the right of center for a joystick.
