Well, the newest Porsches are nice, no question about that, but what I have
noticed is that there are a whole lot of late '70s, early '80s 911s
available for the price of an average car. Considering the air cooled flat
6 is very dependable, given the proper care, and that the bodies are
galvanised, this may be the overlooked bargain in sports cars. Certainly a
few classic magazines urge people to look into them for a fun car with
reltively low running costs, even though it's a Porsche. I've even seen
people getting their old 911SCs up to the ski resorts of Davos (Switzerland)
without problems, and that's an area that gets 3m of snow. Hmmm... year
round use, the classic sound the air cooled boxer, timeless shape, decent
luggage space for weekend trips, and all for the cost of a four-year old
Golf. I think instead of dreaming about unobtainable Porsche Turbos, I'm
going to be looking for a nice '81 911SC this spring.
