AutoWeek: Porsche Unleashed

by jbo.. » Sat, 25 Mar 2000 04:00:00

The March 27, 2000 issue of AutoWeek has a new yellow Porsche Turbo on
the cover -- it looks just like the car on the cover of the NFSPU box
and CD case.  Coincidence?  Could be.  The caption on the cover:

"TURBO - Why the new Porsche Turbo is the world's best over-the-road
machine"

The article is titled "Absolute Power," and it's a good read -- AND a
great way to get pumped over NFSPU (possibly "the world's best
over-the-road simulator (to date)"?).

Spend the $29.95 for NFSPU, then stop by the bookstore or newsstand
afterwards and drop a few extra bucks for the AutoWeek -- then you'll
have something to help keep the adrenaline flowing when you have to
take time off from NFSPU for the occasional "pit stop."  <G>

Ohhhhhhhh....my AutoWeek came today...nothin like getting out of my truck
after coming home from school, opening up the mailbox, and seeing what has
to be the most beautiful Porsche I have ever seen...should I ever get
$111,000 (preferably more so I can get the carbon brakes, mentioned only as
being in the ballpark of the list price of a Camry) THAT is the car I will
get...6 speed stick, the PSM is standard IIRC (and good...if you decide to
push it too far it saves your Turbo-thrashing butt...), don't care much for
that fancy display on the dash, a good stereo is fine for those rare moments
when the song of a Porsche 3.6 liter turbocharged flat-six isn't enough...

Now, if I could just get a job...

Well, the newest Porsches are nice, no question about that, but what I have
noticed is that there are a whole lot of late '70s, early '80s 911s
available for the price of an average car.  Considering the air cooled flat
6 is very dependable, given the proper care, and that the bodies are
galvanised, this may be the overlooked bargain in sports cars.  Certainly a
few classic magazines urge people to look into them for a fun car with
reltively low running costs, even though it's a Porsche.  I've even seen
people getting their old 911SCs up to the ski resorts of Davos (Switzerland)
without problems, and that's an area that gets 3m of snow.  Hmmm... year
round use, the classic sound the air cooled boxer, timeless shape, decent
luggage space for weekend trips, and all for the cost of a four-year old
Golf.  I think instead of dreaming about unobtainable Porsche Turbos, I'm
going to be looking for a nice '81 911SC this spring.

AutoWeek: Porsche Unleashed

You know, I forgot to mention something...

And they are quite nice.  As long as I can remember, my dad has only had two
different cars.  The current one is a '94 Z28 he bought brand new.  A very
nice car indeed, and actually faster than his previous car - a 1973 Porsche
911S.  Red, tan leather interior, great shape, good paint (it was new - the
car caught fire once after he bought it, someone used the wrong oil fitting
:(  )  Don't know what he paid for it in '85...and right now I can't
remember what he sold it for, but it was enough (combined with his GM card)
to make the Z28 quite a cheap proposition.  Then there's one of his
friends - a family friend really, all of us kids call him Uncle Ron even
though he's not really our uncle - who also, for as long as I can remember,
has had only two cars.  The first was a '72 911, a white one, and with him
being a better driver, he kept laying the smackdown on my dad in SCCA Solo
II slaloms until dad bought the Z.  A few years ago, though, he drove that
'72 to Maine or something, with his wife in the passenger seat and his
daughter in the backseat (another thing the Z has over a 911 - a backseat
that someone taller than Muggsy Bogues can fit in, tho me being 6'2" makes
that Camaro pretty tight :) and came back with another white 911.  '85 (I
think) Turbo.  Got a ride in it once - not too different than my dad's Z
under 3000 RPMs, but once those turbos wind up, WHAM.  He's an extremely
good GPLer too - waay better than I am, and he has to work, I just have high
school!! :)

Snow?  What's snow?  Never seen snow in Phoenix, AZ!! :)

Not uncommon here - I could use a Cobra every day of the year, who needs air
conditioning, just leave the top off and get up to 110 :)

*drool*

*extra drool*

My dad crammed a bag of golf clubs into his!!!  Extremely often!!

Who needs the unobtainable Turbos?  Why not the ones you can own?  :)

Time to look at Autotrader and start calling around for places that don't
involve fast food yet hire 16-year-olds...

One can dream, right?  Hopefully you can find an insurance company that will
let you register it as a "Super Beetle".  Unfortunately, most companies
don't like 16 year olds and Porsches :-(   A couple of years in
insurance-friendly basic transportation should help a lot.

The nice thing about the 911, though, is that there will still be rock-solid
examples around years from now.  Hopefully it won't take you as long to get
yours as it will have taken me (16 yrs); the price I pay for graduate
school, I guess.  It's somehow sad (as a car enthusiast) to think that I
have paid the equivalent of a very nice Porsche in tuition fees to various
universities over the years...

Good choice... I did the same thing 2 years ago and never looked back.
For the price of a new honda civic (in the states) or a used golf (in
europe), you can get even an 83 Sc or an early carrera. If you are
careful about its mechanical condition, mileage is irrelevant. Best car
I've ever owned. Recently, I drove it 800 miles round trip and raced on
a track in the middle for a day. Not a hickup..oh yeah, it's got 130000
miles  ;-)  As I said, for the rpice of a used golf....
