Hawaii Flaky Cars Ahead

Hawaii Flaky Cars Ahead

by Ben Clar » Tue, 07 May 1996 04:00:00

About every other race in Hawaii, I notice weird things
happening especially during the first lap or two.

The cars ahead of me (I have set to see 7) sometimes
seem to be skidding or spinning and then miraculously
flash back to their normal racing line.  Obviously
this makes it hard to race.

Has anyone else seen this?  Has it been officialy reported
to Rick?

I've definitely seen it.  I'll be running along, maybe a couple of car
lengths or so behind some other cars, when all of a sudden there's a bunch
of smoke and the cars ahead of me are spinning out of control, but it
turns out to be a "phantom" wreck... the guys are actually still racing.
This does make it difficult at times.... but I usually try to see if the
spotters say anything if I have time before I reach the "incident".  If
nothing flashes up there, then I know that it's not real....  most of the
time...  :-\

Hawaii users call it "warping", I believe it results from the
latency that occurs over the modem.

I've recently noticed this problem got worse with the latest
release of code Term v2.49 and Multi v1.33-m.

I've also had problems getting my USR Internal Sportster
28.8k modem to connect.  It hangs up when switching over to
Hawaii.  I've tried various connects speeds and init strings
but the results are the same  I've also noticed it has problems
negotiating connection speed during initial handshaking.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  BTW - I'm currently
using an Intel 14.4k external modem only for Hawaii and it works
just fine...
