I have a 21" Sony and I wouldn't trade it for anything.

I agree. Anything with a Sony tube will be good if not excellent. I
would personally go for a flat tube. My primary monitor is a Samsung
NF90. It is perfectly flat. My secondary monitor is a Mag DX700t
which uses a Sony tube. It is not that great though. I am surprised
though because Sony tubes are usually very good.
Make sure you get a monitor with pin balance, etc.

My Mitsubishi DiamondPro 900u (19", flatscreen, aperture grill) looks
great. When it comes to non-CAD/CAM graphics display, it is simply
stunning. For games, imaging and DVDs I really prefer aperture grill
flatscreen monitors- and even for text and detail work so long as you avoid
the highest few res modes where dot mask monitors, for those tasks, really
do seem to work out better, on average.

If not, you'd better stay with Shadow Mask. Just get one with good
Hitachi tube. I personally cannot put up with those dumping wires. So,
I got myself an Iiyama VM450. Nice monitor for all purpose.
Also, when going higher resolution, you may want to consider a good 2D
card to get the most out of it. Also, a BNC cable greatly improves the
2D quality.
Good luck.
