Realistic damage, paddle shifting, auto clutch.  I shift from second
to third during the start and discover that I have no third gear.
After I find fourth and get in line, I've lost ten positions.  I guess
I should consider myself lucky I didn't get booted from behind.  Sure
took me by surprise, though.

Meanwhile, the damage from an actual wreck seems awfully tame.  A car
hits the wall, flips, lands on its roof, and gets t-boned at 100 MPH.
No problem for Super Mechanic: four tires, fuel, some body work, and a
new engine in about thirty seconds.

I think if it were any longer plus if you figure the amount of rear endings
you get because of the AI, people would just be too tempted to hit the esc
key and restart a race from scratch.  At least with the super mechanic, you
still have an outside chance to finish in a decent position.

I don't think it's necessarily a "new" engine rather than just a "repaired"
engine after it's damaged and smoking.
