N3 and GPL graphics

by Evelyn & Rand » Fri, 08 Jun 2001 13:05:54

Looking for any help I can get. I just came out of the stone age with a
new computer and am finally able to run GPL and N3. I'm having some
graphics glitches with both and while I'm sure this subject has been
gone over several times in here I wanted to see if anybody had any
helpful tips or tricks.
First new system, 1Gig with 128 ram and a NVIDIA Geforce2 MX 32mb and
thrustmaster pro digital 2 wheel.
With GPL I've down loaded the two updates for processing speed off
sierra page for it, but it still pauses every so often and program will
suddenly just close up in the middle of a race.I've tried turning all
the options, like clouds, on/off as well mixing up whats on and off.
Seems like less problems with every thing on.
With N3 I bought it instead of N4 thinking this system would be fast
enough, but it still hangs up at times.
Is 128ram  not enough, or should I be trying certain display resolutions
or any other ideas.
thanks for any help

Are you running WinME?  If so, go here
http://www.legendscentral.com/guides_winme.shtml

gpl will slow down and close of ME is creating a restore point.

hope that helps

Periodic pause could be "AGP Aperture" in BIOS when booting. Caught me out
for months after I upgraded to a GF2. Default on some motherboards is too
small - think you need 64 MB (even with 128 MB RAM - I have 64mb ram and
BIOS change fixed the pauses).

Could be an overheating problem.  Try removing the casing off your
casing and see if it still occurs.  It happens on my system where
suddenly the screen will freeze for a split second and, if I leave my
casing on, it eventually screen freezes completely though I can still
exit out.  Having the casing off generally helps me prevent this -
except on really hot days, which here in the UK are pretty rare so no
problems there then.

Also, hopefully you aren't running any other background processes except
explorer and systray.

I thought the AGP aperture was something that you really don't want your
computer to be using at all if possible because it means that the
computer is having to pass some of its graphics storage to other parts
of the system instead of just to your graphics card - correct me if I'm
wrong - and so, although 64mb should be the best setting it's a pretty
redundant one either way.
