Problems with N3 graphics....

by Dave St.Ong » Fri, 17 Sep 1999 04:00:00

Excuse my computer ignorance, but I'm having a problem getting N3 run
properly in Direct 3D.  I really know very little about graphics cards,
except that I have a ATI rage card, which was included when my computer was
purchased.  That being said, when I installed a couple of other games
recently, everything has ran fine.  However, when I installed N3, the
program detected Direct 3D, yet when I go into the game, I have all sorts of
funky colours.  However, when I turn off 3d acceleration, the game ran fine,
but the graphics weren't much better than Nas 99.  I have a PII 400 mhz
system w/96 mb of ram.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Secondly, I have a MS Sidewinder gamepad, and a Thrustmaster GP1 steering
wheel, and tonight I purchased a joystick switcher so that I don't have to
unplug one accessory to use the other.  However, the wheel only registers an
error while the Sidewinder works perfectly.  I went to the Thrustmaster
ProPanel for the setup of the steering wheel, yet it still registers an
error.  Aside from some sort of problem with the switcher, is there anything
I can do to fix the problem.

Once again, thanks for any help that might be forthcoming, as it would
really be helpful considering my expertise in computers is not much higher
than that of a 3 yr old.....

I have an ATI rage and my only advice is to use software mode.  You lose alot of
the eye candy but the racing is great.

from what ive been reading it sounds like the d3d support...sucks...and the
3dfx support blows it away...im noticing many problems with ati
cards....personally if anyone is thinking about a new video card ...heed this
warning...

Is This A Fair Estimation On The Problems?

I have a Voodoo2 12MB.  Anti-aliasing or color depth of the***pit looks
nothing like the screenshots on Papy's website.  I just downloaded the
latest drivers as well.  It is obvious my card is only putting out 256
colors.  ?

from the readme.txt file-

DIRECT3D ISSUES

NASCAR? Racing 3's Direct3D rasterizer should work on a large number
of video cards and chipsets, but there are some that currently have
driver or hardware limitations that will inhibit its performance
and/or functionality.  Due to memory constraints Rendition V1000 cards
may work in Direct3D if many of the games textures are turned off, but
it is recommended that you use the software rasterizer instead.
Rendition V2200 cards currently have driver issues which cause texture
filtering to not work properly.  The ATI Rage Pro and Riva128 also
have various texture anomalies and again are not recommended to be
used with the Direct3D rasterizer.  As always it is recommended that
you install the latest video drivers for you card, as it's possible
that some of these problems may be resolved in upcoming driver
revisions.

Baloney.

My Asus V3800 TNT-2 non-ultra is far, far better than the Monster II card I
also have.

lets be fair...compare the correct generations...of course tnt2 is gonna run
better than voodoo2...compare it 2 voodoo3 and itll probably blow your v3800
out of the water...when all is said and done...3dfx is the best for ***...

I think that the D3D problem are a results of rendering limitations/problems
of DirectX and not of the sim. I'm sure once Microsoft fixes this in a
future release, and it is my understanding that they are, D3D will be much
improved.

Also, it might be worthy to note that if you are using 3dfx, you may notice
better performance if you disable the VSYNC, which synchronizes buffer swaps
to the refresh rate. You may be able to do this in the video properties of
the card or  definetly with a program like Power Strip.

I did.

There was no water, and there sure wasn't any blowing going on.
