Why GPL - show off or swank????

by Emerson Laud » Fri, 28 Dec 2001 10:01:51

I've got this "game" GPL for quite a while now, patched it to newest
version, but I really don't see why so many people think this is such a
great sim. It is ugly (compared to todays games) has a terrible sound, and
these old cars are not funny to drive. My guess is, that it is just to show
off and say "I'm a GPL-driver". The support for Force Feedback is lousy
unless you spend hours and hours to tweak it to your wheel. That is because
the game is so old, that FF was not invented when this game was sold in
stores.

I'm NOT surprised there has never been a GPL2.

Hello Emerson

Just a wild stab in the dark, but I'd guess GPL doesn't look like this
on your rig:

Do you have a 3D card?

<Snip!>
Hi Emerson(?)

You being a Dane, you should take a look at http://www.simracing.dk or
perhaps http://forum.racesimcentral.com/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=10
which is our official forum.

Not just for crusty old sims like GPL - we have everything worth
driving, especially online!

Cheers,
Jens

Emerson,

This isn't a game at all, it's a "simulator" which means it simulates
driving a race car.  This game is so popular because it is very realistic,
as far as the physics go.  The graphics are continually improving with all
the add-ons by sim drivers.  It's not very funny to drive, but it is
tremendous fun, because of the tremendous challenge provided by its reality,
and for a lot of us GPL drivers it's the closest we'll get to racing real
cars.

Bzzzzt.  It's still the most beautiful racing sim at the moment.

Yeah compared to...?

Well, that might be the source of your problems...

And no other patches? No GPLEA, no soundpack, no extra tracks?

I guess not on the above.

Definitely not on the above then; and even with the stock sounds, I'd never,
ever, ever call any of the sounds of those cars terrible. Come on; the Honda
V12, Ferrari V12, BRM H16, Repco V8, Cosworth V8, the Weslake V12...you just
don't get much of a better-sounding group than that.  Something tells me you
find the sound of an unmuffled Civic rather pleasant. *gag*

And likewise, I'd never call a Lotus 49 or Brabham BT24 'funny to
drive'...I'd call them some of the most beautiful and high-performing pieces
of art on the face of this earth.  I have to wonder about what someone
considers 'fun to drive' if one of those isn't...let me guess, a Civic
again?  'Cause, you know, getting sideways is never ever ever any fun, so
use a front-wheel-drive and take that possibility right out...

If the game were really as bad as you say, that'd mean nothing.

The support for Force Feedback is lousy

Your point being?  It was added, after all, along with Direct3D, not out of
market demand, but out of the love for this game by some programmers at
Papyrus.

I'm not surprised a single soul has yet to agree with you.

Wow how did you guess? I drive GPL purely for status and to brag. When
I go out and hang in the bars, all the other guys have lame pickup
lines, but me,, haha I have GPL ,, something like "hey baby whats your
name, oh and by the way my best lap at Nurnburgring is 7:35, so can I
get your number?

sounds to me like your just getting frustrated at how difficult GPL
can be but there in lies its beauty...

Have you ever seen a group of people so passionate about a  3 year old
game ? More here then just show off or s***   :-)

No other sim gets your *** pumping or your adrenaline flowing like
GPL, sometimes its hard to believe its just a sim..

For shame!  How dare you talk down GPL.  Thirty years from now the same ten
people still will be talking about GPL this and GPL that.  And VROC this and
VROC that.  And Papy this and Papy  that.  And Cart this and Cart that.

It's the same BS over and over and over.  It's the Civ III of GPL.

What a surprise that you slam the game and never return.  You've got TROLL written all over you.
The gfx are fantastic, the force feedback aftertweaked for your wheel is very realistic, and the car
physics model is pretty accurate, what more so you want in a SIM?  Sounds like you should go back to
your arcade console games, since you have not bothered to reference any sims you find better than
GPL.
