GPL, Hardware as Standard?

by gdf1 » Fri, 26 Mar 1999 04:00:00

GPL runs so incredibly BADLY in software rendering that I really believe
that they should have made hardware support (Rendition and Glide) as
standard for this game. A friend of mine was dead e***d about this after
seeing how wonderful it looks on my computer, bought it and now can't return
it, because he doesn't have the hardware.

What do you think?

Well, making it a requirement would have been realistic, at any rate...

Kind of like how they say it will run on a p200 or something,
which is ok - unless you actually want other cars in the race!

Well, on my AGP video card and PII-450 it actually is not too bad,
though you must use the lower resolutions and less detail. I can get
However, I agree these things are nice only when you want to multiplay
the game using machines that don't all have 3D cards but just fast
processors.

Someone who worked on GPL said here that they didn't want to include software
support, but Sierra made them add it.  If your friend is so e***d, he should
get an accelerator, they're not that expensive.

My desktop PC is a Pentium 166, 32MB of RAM and a Voodoo II card. In
software rendering I get LESS than 1fps and in 3Dfx I get around 26fps
- however, even in 3Dfx, with a single other car on the track and
everything virtually all the way down, I suffer with around 7 - 10fps.

I can't begin to imagine software rendering in a single race, LOL!
