Grand Prix II - Frame Rates

It's Finally out !
Yes, I didn't believe it either un til I saw it.
So, whats it like?
It appears ver similar to the original F1GP in initial game play, but the
imediate thing that hits you is that it has the 1995 cars and drivers !! Come on
Geoff it's already over half way through the 1996 season, surely you could have
updated the driver/team names by now, but then I suppose this would have meant
another delay whilst all the new car graphics were created ;-)
With the wealth of graphics options I would imagine just about everyone will be
able to get it to run in some form but on my machine (P166 32Mb Stealth Vram) I
could achieve 12 fps with all detail at maximum, but turning the sky texture off
resulted in 17fps, not a lot considering the processor power.
With the detail set to VGA and minumum I was getting >25 fps and only using
20 - 30% cpu time, and the game looked like F1GP1.
So far I have only played for about an hour but the car setup options look
comprehensive and the other driver models seem to be ok, I did a
non-championship race at Germany starting at the back of the grid, with stock
defaults, and had a good battle against one of the cars for a few laps. These
guys do not give in that easily, or maybe I'm a poor driver - replies not
required !

These are just a few initial gut feelings which will no doubt be expanded on in
the next few days/weeks.
It appears as if it has the same feling as the original so it can't be all that
bad, can it?
Anyhow this is just my 0.02 worth, I'm sure this will be one of many posts on
this subject.

Steve.

Hiya all

I have a P133, 16mb EDO ram, 2mb Diamond Stealth 64 Dram and a 4x CD-ROM
drive and here are my frame rates.

VGA:
Full Detail front and mirrors = 18.2fps
Full detail front, track and fence in mirrors = >25.2fps

SVGA
Full detail front and mirrors = 14.2fps
NO Detail = >25.fps

I prefer VGA though.  Don't ask me why, I just do.

Cya

Have a second look. The drivers/team names look like those in '94! ;-)

Ok, I did say it was a very quick look.
After playing it for most of the weekend, and going head 2 head with a friend, I
have to say that I no longer care what the car and driver names are. The
graphics are stunning. The thing that gets me most is the fact that when the
qualifying session finishes you do not get to finish the lap if you are out on
the circuit. I was nearly 2 seconds quicker and on the grid when session ended
came up and it did not count the lap :-(
All said and done this is a great program if you have the machine to run it and
I may well have to get myself a T2 before long.

The 'wealth of graphics options' are GP2's saving grace for us 486
users.

I'm running a DX2 66, 16mb RAM, CL 5436 video (2mb).

In VGA, Medium detail, textures on Smoke and Trackside objects only
gives me about 15 fps... very playable. The trackside textures gives me
the advert hoardings and bridges etc. This makes the overall views
better
than GP1.

Switching to Low details boosts the frame rate to 21.3 fps, adding track
and kerb textures brings it down 18.2 frames.

The main problem with dropping to Low detail is that the crossover
bridge at Suzuka and the Tunnel at Monaco disappear.

So for the time being I've settled for medium detail as above... Monaco
without the Tunnel is out of the question ;)

I've just been checking the processor occupancy at Silverstone, one of
the less graphically demanding circuits. Most of the time it was
hovering around 60% to 70%... so clearly it's possible to increase
detail on some circuits and reduce it again for Monaco etc.

Anyway enough waffle, time to get testing and learn how to use the data
analyser.
