Papyrus NASCAR Racing - Q: about Video resolution

by David G. Marti » Sat, 03 Jun 1995 04:00:00

I have a 486 DX280 with SVGA, 8MB Ram, and 2X CDROM.  It is an 80 MHz
machine and I have never had any problems or complaits about resolution.

The pictures on the CD that Papyrus NASCAR Racing comes in appears to be
higher resolution than I am getting on my moniter.  The program appears
to run fine, and I have no problems with frame generation, at least it is
fine with me.  Nothing I do can make my screen look like the package.

Am I really in SVGA, or am I in VGA?  The only difference here is the
number of colors.  16 vs. 256

Has Papyrus fabricated the pictures on the CD?  Something not all
together uncommon in today's market.

Is my computer just not fast enough to display 256 colors and it is using
16 instead?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.  BTW, Three cheers for Papyrus.  I
abolutely love this simulator.  I drove 500 laps at Bristol and help it
in my arms for days.  I won, but all drivers were at 80%.  Ha Ha.  Wish I
could do that for real with DE.  Just joking, he is truely a great driver.

Try typing "nascar -h" for the svga mode.  also, if you type "runme" it will
ask to for vga or svga format.

Your probably executing nascar without the -h argument.

c:> nascar -h

Will give you the resolution you want.

On my CD I've got live action shots of the real thing. Not what I'd
expect my PC to be able to do this year anyway!

On my BOX I've got some attractive SVGA screen shots.

Have you read the manual?!

Sounds like you're running the default VGA mode to me.

When I saw the screen shot pictures in the first previews of this game
in the PC magazines I did wonder a bit. But no more!

The question is better phrased as "Is my PC fast enough to run in
SVGA?" Depends on your video card and the detail setting. I honestly
don't know what the minimum for SVGA performance is, but I've got a
P90 in my bedroom, so I'm a bit spoilt. Sorry.

Just wait until you see the full SVGA mode on a PC that can handle it.
It is truly awesome! Indycar 2.0 is bound to make me very emotional!!!

I too have a 486 DX/2 80 W/SVGA card but only VGA monitor. You are in
VGA and are getting 256 colors (go into Paintkit and look at the pallet,
you'll see 256 colors there). I don't know how to get SVGA but someone else
 here will.

I need to know how to tell if I am running in SVGA? I have a 486 dx2 80
with 12 megs ram and an S-3 video card with 2 megs mem. Also a Compaq
461t monitor which I have been told is SVGA. The interior of my car does
not look as crisp as in the box pictures. Can someone help?

I had the same problem and someone informed me to try the -h switch at
startup. Example c:\nascar -h. Tried it out and it works great.

Try running Nascar and then Nascar-h.  One sure sign of whether or not
you're getting SVGA is the text on the initial credits.  In SVGA,
Nascar-h, the text is smaller and much more precise.

If there is no text difference, then you aren't getting SVGA.
