Total Immersion Racing (PS/2 woes). kinda newsflash I suppose.

Hello all,
I know you're PC *** aficionados, however I thought I'd share this little
gem with you...

I bought TIR for the PS/2 on the release date and then tried to get working
with either of my Logitech steering wheels (widely touted as being supported
on the box/manual).
No deal, "Totally Impossible Request" I think.

Quick call to Empire, and they say it's a known issue, and that they're
looking into it.
So, if you're a driving fan like me, and have a PS/2, best wait until TIR
1.1 is released...

Shame really, the game looks like it could have been a reasonable contender
for a next gen 24hLM.

Ho hum, back to NFSHP2 which is proving to have a lot of replayability.

Regards,
AndyC

So unlike us PC users who can expect a patch to resolve Force Feedback
issues and some stuttering graphics, will they issuing a PS2 patch?

I'm actually growing to enjoy this title, stepping into a rear wheel drive
BMW after the Audi TT look-alike is a bit of a shock when it rains at
Silverstone. So there are some major differences in the way they've got the
cars handling.

Sounds are a bit weird though, lovely raucous noises from the cars then all
of a sudden it all goes a bit quiet!

Andi.

Really?!!
I've tried everything, every combination too!
I've also got both, the GT Force and GT Driving Force.
What steering wheel are you using?

Indeed, how do you patch a console...?

And don't tell me how good it is!!! I've been eagerly awaiting this game for
ages, and am crestfallen now that I'm having these problems with it! I'm a
complete GT fan you see, even went to Le Mans to watch the Bentley the first
year they raced the new car.

It does appear to me that they've got some issues with their testers, so I'm
taking advantage of Electronic Boutique's returns policy this weekend and
may buy it again if there's a re-release.

Ok, I think I've worked out the problem. Its due to a poorly designed
interface and goes something like this...

Take out the USB steering wheel and go to the control screen. Cycle
around all available controllers for player1 (it lists "Dualshock" and
"Steering wheel"). Plug in the USB steering wheel and do it again. You
should see a third option called "Driving force" (or "GT force"
depending on what wheel you have). If you don't see the third option
you have the wheel plugged into the wrong USB slot so swap and try
again.

Hope that fixes it :)

Thanks Ela,
Having heard your words of wisdom, I also gave Empire a call, and actually
had a coherent conversation with the tech support chap (he even went away to
check something with the testing manager...!).
He wasn't as comprehensive as you though, so I'll give it another go
tonight.
Thanks for the help in advance!

Sorry, only do this at work!

The saga is now over, it did work!
But, it's a real faf trying to get it to work, the manual says upper, the
support guy said lower. Common sense says have it plugged in on turn on, but
actually you need to plug it in so it detects it during the game.

But enough about that, what about the game?

Initially, menu interfaces seem OK, the music is a bit samey but passable (I
turned the music down).
But frankly as long the interface allows me to race I'm stoked...

So, I select the Noble (UK heritage and all that) and go for a few laps of
Silverstone.
Hmm, first corner at the end of the start-finish... turn in, turn in a bit
more, nose drops, back steps out huge bad handling moment. bummer.
I stick with it, forcing the car round the circuit, getting used to the
handling, and having the race engineer tweak a few things, making me
quicker, nice touch. But it still drives like my dad's Volvo 240.

So, before getting into a full on race I check the settings, and lucky I
did, the springs, anti-rollbar and dampers are all set on blamonge setting.
So, after stiffening everything up, I knocked another 4-5 seconds off a lap,
and it was much more relaxed driving. I've no idea why the engineer didn't
do this, maybe the initial setting was so far out it was beyond hope!

The race then... qualified 3rd in my class, two BMWs in front.
Race start, thrash down the inside pass to GTS cars into the first corner,
ha! round the next few corners (*) I discover the whole emotion thing. I get
punted by just about every car on the circuit, there's leaning on my car
exiting the corners, punting from behind, generally it's like a stock car
race! But, for two of the 5 laps I keep the GTS cars honest, being passed on
the straights, and taking them on the corners. Good racing. Well, until I
overstretch myself into a corner and bite dust. Bummer.
Still, I manage to get back a class win, on the medium difficulty setting,
after about 10 practice laps. Not bad I thought.
But is it too easy? I think not, it's a game where settings make a heap of
difference, and the competition is fierce.

Graphically, it's comparable to TOCA race driver, and to be honest, the
whole game has a similar feel, although the interface isn't there, there's a
story line (of sorts) and the pack driving feels similar if a little more
brutal. I reckon the force feedback is better too.

I even started a season, but got punted off round Monza, and although I
thought I'd saved it, I've had to re-start the whole season (I wanted a
win!).
Personally, I prefer TOCA Race Driver, but then that's not got the Bentley
has it...  ;o)

AndyC

*I am aware that I should know the names of the corners on this hallowed
circuit, but it's Monday!
