When an incident doesn't touch people directly (or by proxy, or by
identification), some of them are going to wise crack about it. It's just
the way things are.

The Coulthard joke wasn't funny really, but it was satire and satire is
never to everyone's tastes. There is no great tradition of satirical humour
in the US as there is no great tradition of it in Australia (let's face it,
these countries have no tradition), therefore, anything not politically
correct is offensive, whereas in the UK, we read between the lines more and
find the real joke, in this case at the FIA's expense. Clearly nobody saw
the joke had nothing to do with the pilots and therefore leapt down the poor
man's throat. We should have just ignored it, instead of drawing attention
to it.

|Not so Chris. Did you try telling any Princess Diana jokes just after
|her death. Don't think they would have gone down too well. I went to a
|comedy night a few days after her death and the guy on stage tried this
|and was rewarded with stoney silence. So to say that somehow we Brits
|are more likely to appreciate this kind of humour and that Australians
|and US guys are more hung up about this kind of thing is a gross
|generalisation.
|
|As far as my own opinion of the 'joke' goes, it wasn't funny for
|starters, and it is all too easy to make fun at the expense of others.
|Let's hope this guy can laugh at his own misfortunes in much the same
|way.

MCN reports that Ulm was adjusting the engine management switch from the wet
to dry position and accidently moved it to OFF.
So it was WAY before any braking point and not much Foggy could have done
about it.
What I can't believe is that any switch would have such a simple way to
accidently kill the engine !! I bet it will be a seperate switch before the
next race :-)
Peter
PS: Sorry for taking it even further OT.
PPS: NO I am definately *NOT* a Fogarty fan !
I take it MCN means Motor Cycle News (the magazine)? Do they have any web
presence?

Yes. It's www.motorcyclenews.com - surprise !
... and the article is at
http://www.motorcyclenews.com/sport/sport.asp?page=Latest+Sports+News...
Please buy the paper ! It is already getting thin on news and fat on
advertising for the money :-(
Though the web site is now much improved, maybe I'll save myself the money
and stop buying it :-)
Peter
PS: Only 24 days till I'll be on the Isle of Man for some *real* bike riding
..... and drinking, and partying, (and sobering up before riding again) !!
Haven't seen the paper version at my newsagents for quite some time now.
Cheers for the links Peter, appreciate it.

PS.: deeply envious of you going to the TT. Then again, I'm such a wuss on a
bike I prolly shouldn't go to "real" biker meetings anyway. ;-)

You can keep in touch with the TT at www.iomtt.com. All the results as they
happen, PLUS real-time commentary at www.radiott.com
Last year had two web cams - at the start and on the mountain. It was great
for checking the cloud before deciding where to go to watch. There was a
promise of more live web-cams this year. So keep an eye on the web sites.
I'll e-mail you from the island just to make you more jealous :-)
That is if I'm fit to travel. Dropped the bike two weeks ago. Saved by
leathers and helmet and ended up with just soft tissues damage in wrist -
the right one so throttle control on the bike is "iffy" :-( Got 23 days to
get it sorted !!
