The part about the wing settings etc. was simply funny, if no people
would have been killed/injured the whole story would have been damn
funny.
I could laught about the wing comparrison, but the fact that people
got killed in the accident was reason enough not to make jokes about
the crash.

I find the responses to the joke far more interesting.  It is surprising how
much political correctness differs in different cultures.  I am here in the
UK and if I repeated this joke to people they would probably laugh, but it
is clear that in Australia and the US this kind of joke is totally faux pas.

BTW he was 7mm outside the legal limit. The 5mm is for manufacturing
tolerance, there was no manufacturing fault, hence the claimed "only 2mm."

The witticism was not even witty.

Eighty years after the incident they will certainly cause less offence than
a joke about a deathly incident merely days old, don't you think?

I remember a well known comedian (Bill Maher I think, but can't be
sure) being asked once about the sometimes fine line between what's
funny and what's not, to which he replied:  "Drama is when something
bad happens to you.  Comedy is when it happens to the other guy!"

hmm, which leads to my "apology"-post where I was talking about fresh
wounds...... if you are really affected yourself (talking about the
relatives and friends of the 2 Pilots, analogy to the relatives of the
Titanic-victims, provided some are still alive), what's the difference,
whether a joke is made the next day, the next year or 80 years later? In any
case, it will stir around in you again. What about Holocaust-Victims? Also
55 years past, yet here in Germany, don't u dare make jokes on that in
public!

Thank you. You could not have provided a better response if I'd paid you to
do so.
I rest my case.

Not so Chris.  Did you try telling any Princess Diana jokes just after
her death.  Don't think they would have gone down too well.  I went to a
comedy night a few days after her death and the guy on stage tried this
and was rewarded with stoney silence.   So to say that somehow we Brits
are more likely to appreciate this kind of humour and that Australians
and US guys are more hung up about this kind of thing is a gross
generalisation.

As far as my own opinion of the 'joke' goes, it wasn't funny for
starters, and it is all too easy to make fun at the expense of others.
Let's hope this guy can laugh at his own misfortunes in much the same
way.
