GPL Newbie: Thanks for ruining my life!!

by nix » Fri, 07 Jul 2000 04:00:00

Ok, now I have the actual game (instead of the warez version, see the
earlier "confession" post for details).  Patch and visit Alison and
off we go.  All I can say is....WOW!  You folks aren't kidding when
you keep saying how good it is.  With the FF (I had only driven
pre-patched GPL) and some of the limited skills I have picked up over
the past year, I found the effect to be electric.  Actually FEELING a
car on the edge of adhesion, instead of suddenly spinning out without
warning (F12K) was a near-religious event.

So now my life is ruined.  My kid is bugging me to play Diablo 2, and
even enticing me with TOCA 2.  Sorry kid, yer on yer own now.  I gotta
race.  And race.  And race.  Oh yeah, and read Four Wheel Drift when I
should be working.

I don't think this is going to wear off any time soon.  Only GP3 can
save me now......

Ha... I read that book about three times through when I was running a series
of all-night experiments in our lonely lab.  It kept me sane, although once
I got so wrapped up in the book, I forgot to check the experiment.

Your life is over.....you got to face that now.....not even GP3 can save
you.  Your not going to get that four wheel drift feeling from a modern F1
car, no matter how realistic it is.

Welcome to GPL anonymous :)

Hi, I am Ashley and I race GPL  <*Applause from the rest of the GPL support
group*>

......It all started when someone suggested VROC.....I thought I could stop
anytime.........The sound of them engines........the trail braking.....the
sidewaystastic action........I just kept telling myself i could stop
anytime..... <*SOB*>

The problem is none of us want to stop :)

Welcome to the party pal.!!!

A little advice...watch out for the walls....fences....straw
bales, dodgy brakes, ***tyres, twitchy steering and the
***s that run you off the road fer a laugh.

Oh aye....and be prepared to learn new swear words.

"Gnnyyyaaahhhhhhhhhhhggggggaaaaddddbsstttttttaaaaaaard.!!!" is a
personal favourite in my house...don't know what it means but I
reckon it will get you arrested in Saudi Arabia.

Come to think of it...that would be one way to cure your GPLitis
***ion.

Just don't expect to be able to brush your teeth or play the
piano again.

Ian.

GPL Newbie: Thanks for ruining my life!!

Ok, now a little update on my hopeless plight.  Last night, I jumped
into a GP car (a Lotus yet!) just to see what that puppy would do.  I
was so surprised I almost soiled myself.  After crashing into a few
bales and doing one really great endo, I found that I could actually
drive the thing.  From a 2+ minute lap at the Glen, I eventually ran a
1:17.5.  I was so freakin proud, I felt like the (illegitimate) son of
Jim Clark.  I have no idea if this was an ok time for my first time or
not, and don't really care.  I have never had such a virtual rush as
going up the esses hill at (almost) full tilt.

So, maybe I have passed the stage where I am supposed to be really
frustrated.  I figure racing with helps would only make me relearn
everything all over again (insert learned GPL wisdoms here).

Now is where the ***ion really begins, maybe?

You're getting closer to the current record, 1:03.something :)
I think the average laptime in online racing is 1:05-1:06, so you
still have to work a little bit to get faster.
It takes lots of time, I think you will break the 1:10 pretty fast if
you keep practicing, but after that it gets harder and harder to break
your own records. That's when the real frustration settles in :)

When I first glanced down the list and spotted your message, just for a
second, I thought it said - "GPL Newbie: Running for my life!" and I got
this mental picture of you running round a field with a bull chasing you,
typing in help messages on a lap-top or something.
Made me laugh anyway... :)
