GPL driving style ruined by Mobil 1 Rally Championship

After finally putting in some serious offline GPL practice to prepare for
online racing where my mistakes can affect real people and not just ai, I
received my copy of Mobil1 Rally.I have played nothing but this gorgeous, albeit
slightly flawed(controller and graphics issues----fixable, but a pain the ass.)
sim for 2 weeks straight. Last night I decided to take a run at the ring in a
ferrari with Alisons setup and I couldnt even keep the stupid car on the track.
Now I have to learn all over again !!!!!  And after looking at a list of up
coming titles due to be released I don't know where I will find the time to
race all these games. I think NFS Porsche unlimited has the potential to be a
winner as well as WSC which is making me think "system upgrade !!!!!" .

I just bought Mobil 1 Rally this week (to test out my new PIII 600B system).  What
a game!  Incredible force feedback, and awesome graphics!

My only problem is I can only run it just after I install it (before I reboot).
Otherwise I get an error when it tries to load up.  I hope I can get it to work on
my system or it will have to go back.    :0(

Anybody have similar problems?

Mike

System:
Asus P3C2000 MoBo w/ PIII 600B at 133Mhz FSB
128MB 133Mhz Ram
IBM 20.GB Hd
Voodoo3 2000 PCI
SB Live! Value
MS Sidewinder FF Wheel

Funny, my experience is the opposite. After finally winning the A7 champ,
then getting VERY frustrated with the A8 cars (that extra bit of speed
changes all the braking points) I went back to GPL and *finally* broke 1:30
at Monza within a few days (1:29.66). I seem to have stabilized in the low
1:30's since then (never under 1:30 again though).

Mind you, I also downloaded Greger Huttu's Lotus setups around the same time
so that's probably not a coincidence.

On the topic of sim "cross fertilization" I find that GPL and/or RC2000 have
improved my Nascar 3 driving. I'm much smoother and more consistent, enough
so to start a championship (at 10% distance, 98% AI).

I'm kind of fuzzy on what might be causing this. Try posting your problem at
the High Gear forum www.simracingnews.com

Did you ever try the demo of RC before you installed the game? If so, you'll
need to delete the registry key and then do a fresh install.

There's about 18,000 postings there so far for RC so I'm sure you'll get a
solution.

Funny... For me, GPL and SCGT (full realisms, patches etc) have
improved my driving enough to make a difference in real life driving on
race tracks... Everytime I go to a track event I am reminded of how
well those games are made. The most revealing thing was how the same
mistakes in real life and those games resulted in the same
consequences.. Just as in GPL/SCGT, I am not smooth enough getting
on/off the brakes or accelerator, and I upset the balance of the car.
;-)  Great fun !

As for RC2000, it's pretty and I love rally, but I kinda hate the TOCA
feel of the steering wheel (on or off) and the fact there is about 4
inches on each side of the car to play with, then you're off the road,
but hell, it's pretty.

Funny, I found the opposite to be true.  After messing about with the
controls (tip to everyone - get DXTweak from the Logitech wingman team -
www.wingmanteam.com I think), I've really enjoyed it so far.  It's
amazing how time flies when you're doing 25mile stages!
In GPL I've become alot more comfortable throwing the car about, and I
find it much easier to catch oversteer and ride it through.  That could
just be me, though.  Compared to the best drivers I still suck ;)...

Heck, some claim to be better drivers on the street for their sim
experiences. :-) Maybe so; I also think it helps a little, if only to better
understand how a car behaves close to the limits. I wonder how much faith
you have in this belief. Have you tried realistic damage and full GP-length
races in GPL?

Thanks David.  I'll do that.  I got a Windows Registry error last night.  I
don't know if it is a related issue or not, but I would think so.  I'll have to
try some things this weekend when I get some time.  I've also send some
questions to EA to see what they may know (if anything).

Regards,
Mike

Since I got engaged and started thinking about kids my real-life driving has
gotten a lot farther from the limits. That's why I use sims...

Anyway, GPL skills don't translate well to a 90hp FWD Honda Civic very well
:)

I always use realistic damage but *never* full-length GP. My average is 15
laps at Monza between hard impacts with immovable barriers.
