Can someone from Papyrus please advise us why so many people are
experienceing freezes, if it's a GPL problem and is there a fix in the
works?

I suspect you're referring to the "I'm using a Voodoo2 card, and sometimes
my screen stops updating, but the game clearly continues to run in the
background because I can hear the world march on.  I've tried every set of
3Dfx drivers I can get my hand on, I'm not overclocking either my system or
my Voodoo2 board, I've tried underclocking the Voodoo2 board, opening the
case, blowing fans at the machine, etc.  Nothing seems to help." problem.
We do not yet know what is causing the problem, mostly because we cannot
get any machine we have in-house to exhibit it.  We're in the process of
obtaining a machine that exhibits this behavior from a GPL customer.  Once
we get that machine in our offices, we can try to figure out what's going
on.

Er, "me too", except my machine has a VoodooI Orchid Righteous, so please
don't restrict your testing to VoodooII-equipped machines!

thanks

If it's any help, I removed the Diamond Video Control Panel from the
System Tray and it stopped doing it. In fact, I cleaned up my system tray,
so only the Monster Sound M80 mixer utility was present there. I don't use
Win95/98 DUN, so that's never resident.

My hunch is that it's a call to an area where some resident system tray
utility is doing something.

I have an idea about what is causing this. Are any of you
using an A3D sound card? Specifically I noticed this problem
with a DCS S805 A3D PCI sound card installed. I tried the
original drivers from DCS, updated drivers from DCS, and the
reference A3D drivers. Nothing helped the freezes. There
were numerous other problems as well besides GPL. Needless
to say, but this card is going back and I do not recommend
it. Went back to AWE64 and the problem disappeared. I have
also tried a Turtle Beach Montego, and while the freezes
didn't appear, and the sound quality is good, the controls
went to hell. On my system at least the AWE 64's game port
is much better than the Montego, DCS S805, or TM ACM card,
which by the way, was a great surprise to me.

Win98
GPL retail Rendition mode
Thriller 3D PCI 4mb
Celeron 450a
128mb T.I. PC-100 SDRAM

also has
Linksys LN 2 PCI Ethernet card
Monster 3D II 12mb, latest Diamond drivers

On my machine it's possibly a silly combination of V2 drivers and
Logitech
MouseWare 8.0x. I had the demo working with MouseWare, probably added
new
V2 drivers (don't have a log ;^), demo froze. Replaced MouseWare with
the
standard mouse driver, demo worked again...

We do ALL close all not imperitive applications before starting a race
don't we? Or have I been getting just a little CPU resource neurotic

The only problem I had with the demo on mine was the video locking when
the screensaver kicked in.

Now, who really needs a screensaver ? No probs since.

I even disable my Task scheduler (in Win95 Plus or Win98).
It launches programs at a given time.

I have the same problem using a Canopus Total 3D (Rendition Verite' 1000 chip)
in a P200MMX machine.  So, it's not just V2 cards.

The screen locks up after about 10 minutes of racing.  Did the same thing with
the demo version.  The game continues "behind the screen".  I know from the
sounds of tires squeeling and crashing into the fence.

Glad to hear you guys are working on it.  Keep us posted!  I''d be glad to work
with you if it would help.

Thanks,

I suffered this problem until I replaced my motherboard and CPU.

OLD                NEW
P2-233             P2-300A (Celeron)
Abit LX6           Abit BH6
1x64 Mb PC100      1x128 Mb PC100
Bus: 66-83Mhz      Bus: 100Mhz

The problem occurred at all bus speeds: 66, 75, and 83.  The upgrade was
a drop in: Remove mobo and CPU and replace.  No new drivers, no new
software, no OS changes whatsoever.  Canopus Pure3DII Voodoo2.

It works great now.

is it 10 mins exactly, evrey single time? it could be your
screensaver kicking in. if so, try turning the screen saver off,
but if it's not that then don't mind me:)

Is your screen saver set at a 10 minute interval?

Hi Randy,

I am using a V2100 rendition video card, Diamond Stealth S220, I have
experienced this freezing twice now ~<GG>, just to add a further
complication.

Cheers

Mark
