GPL on win2k

Ok, I was trying to setup another server for VROC.  I copied the program, and
tried to run it.  I get the GPL splash screen, then it dumps back to the
desktop.  I tried running the d3d patch, that didn't work either.  I edit the
app.ini file to use softdll.dll as a rasterizer - no good.  It's a win2k
system, 268MB ram, NVidia Riva TNT2 graphics card.  I thought running the d3d
was supposed to work with this card?  I'm sure I just missed a setting
somewhere.  Any suggestions?

Do you have this empty key in your Registry?

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Sierra On-Line\Grand Prix Legends\1.00.000

In my experience, you need to install the game and then copy the old files
on top of the new ones.

If you're running Win2k, have you tried 'compatibility mode'?

If not, make a shortcut to GPL.EXE and view the properties. In there is a
'Compatibility mode' that you can set to Win98. If there is no compatibility
mode, you really, really should apply the latest service packs ...

you dont need the compatibility mode... i had tried it on to get my wheel
working but ended up with jerky respone and frame rates....  looking at the
task monitor, i could see 60% system usage... turning it off, GPL only used
3% system usage, and 30% for the program.

Didn't know about that - I'll have to try it...

This should have all the service packs - it's a newly imaged system.  I don't
have that problem on my other win2K box.  That's why I was thinking it was a
video issue.  This one has the TNT2 video, the one that woeks has built-in
video(Intel, I think).

I actually brought the CD and tried the install yesterday before I left work.
Same thing... :(

I get the same problem on WinXP, tried all the compatibility modes and it's
a no go. I'm using a Radeon 8500 and NTFS. One of those two is causing it,
but I don't know which.

I recently had this problem on a fresh Win2K install. Here's what my testing
found:

GPL on (clean) NTFS formatted second drive (D:\) - dump to desktop.
GPL on NTFS boot drive (C:\) converted from and old FAT32 partition - runs
ok.
GPL on FAT32 drive as (D:\) - runs ok.

What I never tried was GPL on an NTFS boot drive. Some people say it works,
others seem to have problems.

All that I can really say with confidence, is that copying GPL from an NTFS
partition to a FAT32 partition on the same machine made the difference
between dump to desktop and running OK. (I copied the whole directory from
D:\ to C:\, reformatted D:\ as FAT32, and copied it back.)

YMMV.

I did this first but then re-formatted as NTFS and it still worked. Seems to
be some subtle difference between NTFS on the boot partition and on another.

I agree, definatley something to do with the filesystem. It seems to always
work on a fat32 partition.

OK, thx for the heads up. I converted all my partitions to NTFS  before even
installing XP so it looks like I'm out of luck. Oh well....no GPL for me.
