Is there a site that tells how to build pedals

by Matt » Thu, 19 Jun 1997 04:00:00

I am looking for information on how to build a set of top hinged
pedals.  I think I have enough information on building the wheel, but
anybody know of anymore sites that could help, please let me know.

thanks

Are you looking for the electrical or mechanical portion of the task.
The electrical is the same as bottom hinged, but the mechanical problem
is difficult because you either need to brace the top area, or make the
bottom DAMNED HEAVY.

Hello Matt.

I build top hinged pedals from 4mm and 6mm aluminum  plate and
they have taken a beating without damage. They are pivoted 150
mm from the floor with bronze bushings and 10mm pivot shaft.
Clutch has been added and has to be used to get the gears to
shift in Nascar 2. Clutch can be "switched", "analog" or
disabled altogether by a flick of a switch near the gear
lever.
I fit a double "braking-action" and "double pressure feel"
brake pedal that becomes harder to press after the first 10mm
travel to simulate brake shoe contact. I will send you
drawings to give you an idea what they look like but I am
sorry I do not wish to give out detailed plans as I intend to
market them from my home workshop on a small time (when I get
time) basis.
One bug-bear is they need to be braced against the wall as the
brake pedal gets hard to press at the end of it's movment and
they tend to slide away from your foot. I have included
telescoping legs for  bracing at different distances from the
wall, depending on your leg length. I personally don't use them
at all.

Basically I write to you to let you know it can be done with
great success. I use slide pots for the varible resistors
instead of rotary for ease of mechanical connection.
Drawings to follow.
