Need hints building steeringwheel and pedals

by Linus Girdla » Thu, 10 Aug 1995 04:00:00

I have tried buling a steering wheel and pedals using
100k pot.

The electronics are no problem but the mechanics.
Does anyone have any hint how to build and what to use as
steering wheel, brake and accel.

I used a steeringwheel from a "snowracer" and placed to switches
on the wheel for shift up and down.
It didn't work out well. Too sloppy.
It was much harder to drive than with a joystick, it should be easier ;)

hints please.... ;)

I had good results with a bike handlebar & bearing assembly.  I mounted it
on a plank of wood and cut the handle bar to a suitable size (it was a ten
speed style drop bar).  The pot was out of a joystick (flight stick) and
attached directly to the stem of the steering shaft at the bottom end of
the bearing assembly.  The whole thing was very smooth and very rugged.
Only real problem was that it turned out to be a little too sensitive...it
really needs a gear reduction of some kind to connect the pot.

As for pedals, I did make a set out of spare bike parts (gear shift
levers...metal) and wood...they did work ok but had some trouble getting
them to center properly.  I used a single pot connected to each pedal via
a bellcrank/pushrods.   I eventually got a CH Pro pedal set for Xmas (but
I'm not completely happy with them either).

I'm thinking of using bike pedals/crank arms next time since they move
much better and are certainly strong enough.

Mike.
