Building my own pedals ( need some suggestion )

I plan to build my own pedals to replace the LWFF pedals. I don't really
have much experience in building things but i have some ideas on how to do
it. I will take the pots with complete wiring out of LWFF so i won't have to
plug the pedals into serial port + all games that work with LWFF will work
with that combo, too. I will need some sort of steel or wooden frame. I will
probably have it made by an expert ( hope it won't be very expensive ). Now
to the hardest part: pedal travel and resistance of the pedals. This is very
important! The throttle pedal should have a neutral ( not progresive or
regresive ) resistance through the whole travel. Finding an appropriate
spring will be quite hard in my opinion. For the brake pedal i wan't
progresive resistance and relatively stiff. Just imagine syringe with air in
it and you prevent the air to get out and compress it. I think that gives a
good approximation of a real-life-brake pedal. I need you guys to tell me
how to do that. Are there any dampers like this? Remember, it has to give
progressive resistance when compressed and than uncompress as quickly as
possible!

Thanks for your answers and feel free to point out some other problems i
might be facing in my enterprise.

TIA,

Borut.
