I am thinking of buying a wheel for use mainly with GPL or Nascar 3. I
borrowed a friends wheel and I suffered from a big drop in frame rate. Since
then I have upgraded from a cyrix 200 to a AMD 350. Am I likely to still get
a big drop? What about Force Feedback wheels are they worth it? and do you
get a bigger (if any) frame drop? Any recommendations gratefully received.

Thanks Martin

Just got a LWFF yesterday.  No framerate hit that I can tell.  And boy does it
ever add to the overall racing experience!

The box said "Windows 95 or better", so I installed LINUX!

Well, if you can deal with the ***peddles (I can't) the Logitech Wingman
Formula Force wheel is the way to go as far as frames rates are concerned. I
have both the LWFF and the Microsoft SideWinder Force Feedback wheel and the
Microsoft wheel produced a HUGE hit in frame rates =( when force feedback
was enabled. I noticed almost no drop in frame rates with the Logitech
wheel. It probably has something to do with the fact that the Logitech wheel
is USB capable where as the Microsoft FF wheel is not. However, I've opted
to stay with the MSFF wheel because the peddles are far superior to the LWFF
peddles. I just turn the force feedback off and use it anyway since it's at
least a digital wheel (I think). Since Nascar3 only recognizes ID 1 in
joystick properties I was forced to choose between force feedback/ ***
peddles or non force feedback/ good peddles. I chose the latter.

I also just bought a LWFF (to replace my MSFF) and completely agree with
your assessment.  Better FF and framerates, but crappy pedals.  I guess it's
possible to have both wheels connected and use the MSFF pedals with the LWFF
wheel is games that support more than one controller (i.e., GPL).  Have you
tried this and does having the MSFF plugged in affect framerates?

I know on the MSFF, you must use the newest updated drivers (sidewinder) or you
will take a hit on framerates. Using the newest ones, I haveny noticed any
excessive framerate hit (maybe 1-2 fps) but i can spare that 1-2 for the
feedback feeling

Curious. Have you tried DTR yet? I noticed the largest frame rate hit with
this game when force feedback was enabled on my MSFF wheel. The game is
simply unplayable at 10 fps. Also, I tried running the lowest resolution in
the game but the fps hit is just as severe as with the resolution I normaly
run at. BTW, I'm running the latest software version 3.02 on my system.
Didn't seem to affect the fps at all. It could be a problem specific to
K6-II/III (K6-III here) systems in general. Who knows. The game runs smooth
as butter at high resolutions when FF isn't enabled for my MSFF wheel.
Again, as I mentioned in my earlier post I noticed almost no hit in fps with
my Logitech wheel with force feedback enabled.

Agree 100% regarding the framerate hit with DTR... I just couldn't play the
sim at all with ff enabled, this is the only sim I have found this to be a
problem with and that is with my lowly P233mmx setup.

Out of interest how can I tell what version of the MSFF software I have. I
installed the version that came with the unit (version 3.0) and then last
week downloaded the update from the website (it said it was version 3.02)
but when installing it the screens still said that it was installing 3.0. I
can't find anywhere in the software that the version number is shown.. any
ideas??

Call Sidewinder Tech Support and ask for the "Secret Serial Dongle". This
adapter will allow you to send the FF signals through the serial port rather
than the gameport. It is the gameport that is crippling your framerates...
nothing else. The higher the speed of puter.... the bigger the framedrops
will be.

You can read my tech paper at: www.rs2league.com . Grab the Tech Talk
Section, and choose the Gameport Volumes. Should answer the question more
definitively.

Cheers,

Shumi,

I am very interested in the tech paper you mention. Cannot find the Tech Talk
Section, in order to choose the Gameport Volumes on the URL you included. Any
help appreciated.

Our Japanese dislike MSFFW's only 64 phased pedal resolutions.
So, I think LWFF's better too. But, MSFFW's Wheel resolution and
wheel rotation are richer than LWFF's. It makes me harder to handle
with LWFF in NASCAR3. I just got LWFF last week, so, time might clear
this trouble.

Nevertheless, LWFF is the best mass product wheel for GPL! =)
