N3: Voodoo2 vs Voodoo3?

by Tim Jaege » Thu, 02 Mar 2000 04:00:00

I've got a 450 Mhz Pentium II and a Voodoo2 PCI card.  N3 and NL are
basically the only games I play these days.  I still have to limit some of
the options in order to get a decent framerate.

With Voodoo3 cards now available for under $100, would I see some
performance improvement in N3 & NL with a Voodoo3?  Thanks for your help.

yes!!!!! But don't get a Voodoo 3 3500.. they're shite beyond
recognition :)

get a Voodoo 3000 (AGP) 'cos the PCI Version is just basically a Voodoo
2 board with 4mb extra ram :)

Yup, a Voodoo 3  3000 for around a hundred bucks is a good deal and you'll
see the benefits.

Yes.  Definately.  I upgraded just recently from a Voodoo2 to a V3 3000 AGP.
Althouth, I paid $250 for it in Canada.

et a Voodoo 3000 (AGP) 'cos the PCI Version is just basically a Voodoo

That is absolutely incorrect!!
check clock speeds!! DOH!!
actually buy a PCI, not an AGP, because N3 doesnt use AGP!!

I rather doubt you'll get much improvement out of a V3 over your V2.  I
am surprised though, that you have to cut back options on your 450.

framerates in N3, Legends, and GPL as my roommate who has a similar
machine with a Voodoo 3 3500.  I'm going to wait for Voodoo4 and 5
before upgrading--because other than improvements in resolution in
non-Papyrus games, I don't see the benefit of the V3.  Also, I am
stubbornly*** on to my Stealth II Rendition card for CART Racing.

I have too have a PII 450, 128Mb RAM. I'm fortunate enough to have twin
Voodoo 2 PCI cards running in SLI mode, and I can happily run N3 with all
detail at maximum, resolution at 1024x768 and no slowdown. A friend of mine
had a similar setup, but decided to upgrade to Voodoo3 3000 (PCI), and for
all that money didn't see much advance in framerates at all. Wait for voodoo
4. wouldn't hurt to get more RAM in the meantime

A V3 3000 16MB is about $175 in Canada today (if you can comparison shop).

i think what is meant, is that n3 does not use the agp specialities of
the card.  i run it on a p2-400, 128 m ram, w a v3-3500, all options,
on,1024x768,  max drawn ahead & behind, and get 20-30 fps.
