Can anyone point me in the right direction for a good F1 simulation?

And  - after hearing so much about GPL, I downloaded the demo but it won't
run. Any ideas?

P3-450
Diamond Viper V550
64RAM
SB live
22gig.
Cable.
LWFF wheel.

I seem to have no problems with any other games, but GPL is not happening.

Thanks.

I don't know anything about the demo, but you can get a full copy off ebay
really cheap.  GPL is BY FAR the best driving/racing sim I've seen - very
realistic physics.  And this is coming from a race car driver!  I'm
impressed with GPL!!!

FYI, I didn't see anything in your system specs that would be a
problem...but then I seem to recall some discussions about the Diamond Viper
card...

I recently got GPL on Ebay and it is, without a shadow of a doubt, the best
F1 simulation out there.
I have a GeForce card and the demo would not run on my machine.
However, the full version (with a bit of tweaking and help from this NG)
works perfectly.

This is your problem - the demo will not run in openGL mode. You
should still be able to run in software, but software mode is pathetic
really. If you get the full version, the openGL patch will allow you
to run. A few tweaks, and you should have max fps no troubles. Well
worth a purchase - there has never been another sim as realistic as
GPL. Tough, but rewarding racing.

I hated the GPL demo.  It was just terrible (320x200 graphics and the
graphics/sound wouldn't even work properly)

I bought GPL a couple weeks back at a much lower price.  It was the
best $15US I ever spent.  This game is just incredible.

btw I bought mine from www.dragon.ca .  They have a pretty good US
exchange.

I've spoken to a reliable source that says ISI/EA Sports' F1 2000 will
smoke GPL.  This is coming from a person who considered GPL to be
the pinnacle of sims.  Can't wait for 3/25/00...

That will be the day... when EA sports makes a half decent racing sim.
FWIW EA doesn't make sims.. they make games.

In this case, they don't make anything.  They just "produce" it.  It is made
by the same people who made SCGT.

Some people are so dense.  Dude, EA is just the publisher of this
upcoming F1 sim, they had nothing to do with making it.  ISI is just
using EA's name to get the game into people's hands.  Now if EA had
made it, like they did Nascar Revolution, then I'd know even without
seeing it that it would be a joke of a racing game.  ISI employed a
couple people from Crammond's Grand Prix 2 team to help out.

You too are missing a few points.  EA has an enormous influence on
what features a developer like ISI can include in a program.  EA
controls the money and therefore the direction the programmers must
follow.  IF EA says take out the Sim stuff and put more ARCADE thingies
in, then ISA will pretty much have to do what EA wants, if they want to
see any more checks.
Having said that, we can relax some tho, and here's why.
A) EA did NOT choose the Nascar Rev devolopers, who-ever they were.
This indicates they are at least shooting for some sort of sim vs an
arcade product.
B) F12k is fairly far along is development cycle.  Most feature choices
have been made long ago and few new features or deletions occur this far
along the process.  Since several seemingly reliable users here have
seen at least some of ISI's work, I think we can rest assured that the
program choices are definately leaning heavily into the sim side of
racing.

Remember in the end, if EA say make crap, ISI is pretty much obligated
to attempt to produce said crap.  There have been a few instances where
producers and developers have gone separate ways because of design
choices, but this doesn't seem to be a problem with ISI.  This will be
the 2nd program they have produced for EA so they 'should' know at least
how EA operates and what the big boys are looking for.  Conversely, EA
knows that ISI produces a pretty good product so they will probably not
try to influence their coding toooo much.(hopefully!)
dave henrie
ps.  many marketeers have proclaimed in the last year that their new
product was a gpl beater.  To date...I don't think we have seen one
program that does indeed surpass gpl as a sim.  So until F12k or GP3 or
any other sim has been released, reviewed and disected, we all should
hesitate from proclaiming the next king.  When that day comes and the
king is finally toppled from the throne, then we can shout til we are
hoarse.

Funny, EA studios in Canada made the original NFS, which was quite nice at
the time (perhaps it was due to the link with Road & Track).  It happens I
am reading a book at the moment called "No Logos" all about the global
branding phenomenom, where companies are moving towards selling a brand
(EA Sports) rather than concentrating on the products.  Now, ISI is no
Malaysian sweatshop stitching together $200 buck Nikes for a dollar a day,
so I won't be so bold to draw a direct link, but it's a trend that is hard
to ignore.  Sierra contracts Papyrus to produce their premier racing
sims.  papyrus in turn gets some (presumably cheap) Russian artists on
board to cut their production costs.  It's interesting how fast it has
happened in the games industry - I remember when Electronic Arts was a
little shop making games for Apple IIs.

Um... what was my point?  None, really.
