Frame Rate on 16Mb Voodo3 3000?

by cbybe » Sun, 25 Jun 2000 04:00:00

Runnning in 1024 x 768 with every detail item maxed,
in the starting grid I get sub 10 fps. Once running it goes
up to high ***s low twenties, and when everybody blows
past me and I am on my own I get up to the 36 fps range.
Lowering the resolution by itself did not seem to make much
of a difference, so reducing detail bias to 3/4 and simutaneous
sounds down to say 10 and the resolution down to 640 x 480
again, the lower frame rates all jump to the mid twenties, but the
max of around 36 is unaffected. This sound "right" to you voodo
people?  Maybe this card needs to "retire"....

I get 36 fps all the time on 1024x768 with a Voodoo3 3000....

What CPU do you have, sounds like it's not powerfull enough...

oh yeah and a Microsoft ForceFeedBack Wheel, I understand these can be
big resource hogs....

The max fps will never go past 36.

36 fps is the max you can get in the sim.  The detail bias makes a huge
diff in fps.  Try it about 1/2 or even a bit left of 1/2.  With my V3
and PII/350 I get in low 20's on grid and steady 36 after the start.

But they shouldn't...I have a Athlon 600 + V3 + Saitek R4 FF, and
usually get low 20s at the end of a full grid (in Monaco or Rouen)
with everything maxed out and 1024x768. It's a well-known fact that
the number of simultaneous sounds in GPL may have a big impact on
framerate, perhaps you should lower them to 4 which is no problem for
almost all soundcards.

You will never get more than 36fps, that is the limit in GPL, no matter
what hardware or settings you have.

But, you don't need any more than 36fps, thats plenty fast enough.

The real things you want to experiment with are the no' of sounds, the
detail bias, and the *effects* (skidmarks, etc)

You could also try overclocking your V3 card, (Got my V3 2000 running
at 175 here with no probs, default is 143!) it only takes one change to
the registry, see my webpage for details, the overclocking section....

Should be 36 fps at 1024x768 all the time except start.
