On-Line Question for GPL

% I have just raced for the 1st time on the 'net'. However,
% the opponents cars disappear, even when close, and then
% reappear again. Do I need to turn down the res or detail
% level?
% I have a PII 450 with 256 Ram, and a 56k connection, playing
% at 1024x768 (2xMonster 3dfx II cards)

The disappearing cars are usually caused by the player's connection that
is disappearing.  Their latency connection to the host is too high and
when the host doesn't get a response for a long time, it simply blanks
the car.  If your latency count is low (below 400), you should be fine.
and changing your detail level won't help the players with high
latencies.

Isn't it possible to to get packets out of sequence? GPL might ignore the odd one, but if a sequence of data got out of sync might be a bit confusing.

I have a friend who works for a company that makes/lays fibre-optic cables for international
comms and they're churning out everything they possibly can as fast as they can. The
world's appetite for bandwidth is going up faster than it can be satisfied.

Here in the UK we've seen a recent spate of free ISP's who get their revenue by charging a
lot for tech support. Add to that cheap hardware and Xmas, and we could be in for a rather
slow New Year.

Nice to have something to look forward to :-)

It's very possible. Most games time-stamp their packets so that an older
packet comes through than the last one received its thrown away. Unless it's
an important message such as end-of-practice.

Yes it is. I remember having a discussion about this before thinking that ping would be
the *** factor but bandwidth seems to be beyond imagination.

Which would account for the stuttering cars (now you see them, now you don't). They must be a way of  "smoothing" out the gaps, so let's hope
Papyrus get the time to tweak the net code.

Andrew McP... oh damn, I just suggested there's something wrong in GPL!  <fx:throws self out of window>

Ah, but that's because the pro-GPL faction scare people off remember? Must be true because the Y, O,U, S, C & K keys on my keyboard are nearly
worn out.
