Ezzaktly Bruce, this wasn't about politics, CART vs. IRL or any of that
other petty BS. This year's 500 was about the best team in American
motorsport purchasing off-the-rack cars and engines, running minimal
practice laps, qualifying fast enough to start towards the front and then
spanking the opposition at their own game. The Ganassi pit stops were
spectacular, truely a professional outfit. The rest of the IRL regulars had
better raise their game by next year, or more of them will find themselves
standing by the sidelines, as more CART teams "cherrypick" the 500.

Ganassi made it look so easy, maybe a European or Aussie team will give it a
go next year. Some of the F1 teams spend bundles on their F3000 teams, a
one-off run at Indy wouldn't hurt the budget too much.

(snipped)

Now that's something I'd like to see, and not solely for the competition.
The IRL might just need a couple years worth of thrashings by outsiders in
order to get their act together.  Either that, or the *** might
force them to cut a deal with CART and end this split.  Hey, I can dream
can't I?

Course, TG might realize this and never allow it.  But how many out there
are betting that we'll see a few more CART teams at Indy next year?

Yep.  The following information is from the Indy museum:

Milk jug
Another tradition that dates to Louis Meyer and the 1936 Indianapolis 500.
"He drank buttermilk because his mother told him that it would refresh him,"
Davidson says. "He was going to drink that no matter what [after the race],
and a [local] milk federation executive saw it and said, 'Hey, we can do
something with this.' " The chilled milk, now anonymous Grade A whole, is
presented in an old-fashioned glass quart bottle along with a greenery- and
flower-studded victor's wreath. "Rick Mears, who won four Indianapolis 500s,
has each one of his milk bottles mounted on plaques," Davidson says.

I found it quite amusing that in the space of a number of hours, I
watched champagne being fizzed, tossed and drunk after a victory, then a
driver and his crew sipping on a glass of milk. ;)

Excellent tradition!

(and that's not cos I drink gobloads of milk...)

Cheers,
Rod.

Yes, I'm sorry.....my written guffaw about Mr. Boat was uncalled for.

It's just that my Indy memories (from afar, of course......I've never been
there) relate to the period of greatest turmoil...the changing of the guard,
so-to-speak...from the early 1960's.
Brabham with the Cooper (1961), the gradual introduction of rear-engined
cars via the Lotus, Ford and Gurney influence (1963/64), Clark and his great
drive in 1964 and then the big win for Ford and Lotus (1965), Parnelli Jones
and the first STP turbine "Silent Sam" (1967), the wedge-shaped Lotii, first
with turbines and 4-wheel drive (1968), then the influx of
aerodynamics.......right up to the 1990's it was still an event I looked
forward to watching and reading about each year.

Then virtually overnight George blew it away.

You're kidding, right?  You know they wanna take these guys on again
next year.  So they gotta pretty it up for TG.  You think he'd let them
back if they told it how it really was?

>He dropped out of the top 5 I believe. This was due to some unique

Note that before the last set of pitting, Vasser wasn't running number 2 (4,
5, 7?) and was only that high due to his not pitting.  Personally, I was
hoping for a devastating one-two to put another nail in the IRL coffin.
Still, the message was pretty strong.

The problem is, who from the CART series WOULD you like to see at the 500?

I can only think of a handful of CART drivers that I root for:

Michael Andretti
Adrian Fernandez
Dario Francatti
Paul Tracy
Kenny Brack
Max Papas

And... That's about it... And frankly I would even put Andretti on the list,
if he wasn't an American, he's a bigger whiner than Rusty Wallace for God's
sakes :-)

I for one enjoyed the 500, it had a lot of drama leading in.... The return
of Little Al, The two Gal's in the race, Chip's Champion and his other
driver ;-) And all the regular American names that the IRL has in it's
rouster.

>> Funny, in separate interviews, BOTH Ganassi and Montoya said that winning
>> Indy was the BIGGEST thing they've ever done.  Does that make Ganassi and
>> Montoya a bad joke as well?

When did Montoya say that?  He struck me as singularly unmoved by the whole
thing.  He wasn't exactly like those last-minute qualifiers (and bubble
burstees) a week back who were all choked up.

I think it is quite possible that both are at play.  Sure, they are going to
tow the party line.  And it is also worth lots of $ to act as if it is the
case.  But I think it (the memory and tradition of Indy) are still fresh
enough that it does mean a heck of a lot to Ganassi and a lot of the team.
Certainly it will to Target (having nothing to do with racing and all to
sponsorship).   Now Montoya, OTOH, probably considers it just another race and
(I'm really guessing) is quietly laughing.  Then again, he might consider all
of our racing here a bit of a joke :-o

Considering that they have no experience racing or using that IRL
equipment and they simply showed up and kicked everyone's ass....
I would say they are correct. To me it just shows how good that
team really is. I expect Neuman Haas and Penske in the race
next year.

They had to be political. We do not. Like we can tell you to blow
it out of your ass :-)

He was in the top 5 before those pitstops. When everyone went into the
pits he took the lead. And that was the problem. Everyone knew that
Montoya would pass him and he would have to pit anyway. I think he
was doing F1 type team orders and making it difficult for people to
pass to give Montoya a bigger advantage.
