Unsupported refresh at startup - Nascar Heat & Powerslide

When trying to start those two games, the monitor goes into an
unsupported refresh rate and I can't play.  Using the latest display
drivers along with DirectX8.0a but no patch has been installed on the
games.  System it P3-866 with ATI Radeon 32mb DDR & DELL D1025TM
