GPL rank for the less than fast

Here are a few ideas for achievable challenges in GPL rank, for those
for whom "going negative" is but a distant dream.

1.  Get a ranking.  The toughest part is that you have to complete a
whole lap in something at the Ring.

2.  Go to the 107% page.  107% has been a requirement in F1 to make
the grid.  Using the Papyrus standard times as a benchmark, 107% at
Monza is 1:36.51.  You can do that, and the line changes from yellow
to green :-).

3.  Go for 107% against Papyrus at more tracks.  The Glen is 1:11.59,
Silverstone is 1:37.27.  The Ring is 8:57.07.  Watch the lines change
from yellow to green :-).

4.  At this point your rank is likely less than 100 (107% at all
tracks exactly would be about a 106).  Further challenges include
getting a Monster rank or knocking off 107% at a least a couple of
tracks against the world records.  Monza is 1:32.17, the Glen is
1:07.65.  Go for average.  The GPL average rank is 64.

Past that you shouldn't be reading this :-).  You're fast.

<Snip!>

Good advice. Keep in mind that some of the Papy times are pretty good,-
others are, shall we say, not too hot. Silverstone is "easyish" as is
Monza and the Glen. Kyalami and Spa are tough. And the Ring is ... the
ring. Doug Arnao is a pretty fast guy.

Sweet didn't even know that was there. Now I have something realistic to
shoot for. Got 3 of the Papy ones already :)  Monaco and the ring are gonna
be the killers

Strange - I didn't think Silverstone was "easyish", although that's my lowest
percentage now...  I beat Monza, Watkins Glen, and then Silverstone, in that
order.  Those are the only ones, though... :(
I'm actually farther off percentage-wise at Rouen and Kyalami than at the
Ring...

GPL rank for the less than fast

Good advice, it's exactly what I've been working on for the past little
while.  Also, after my first crack at a ranking, I worked on the track that
I had the worst percentage at first, so my rank went down faster.

You know, perhaps I didn't look in the right places, but I never found a
good site that had a step-by-step breakdown of how to go through a corner in
GPL.  At my first crack at it about a year ago, I read some newbie tips,
then got a 200 or so handicap and gave up.  A few weeks ago, I downloaded a
Greger Huttu 7:45 ring lap replay for kicks.  I realized some of the things
he was doing and copied them.  Now I'm at 55 and confident I can go much
lower.  It would have been nice to have a quick step-by-step instruction on
how to turn some moderately decent times instead of page-long descriptions
on how to trail brake.

Look for a package called GPLEGS.  It's written by Malcom Edeson - he's helped
a BUNCH of people here get faster.  Here's one link - I don't know if he's
updated it since this version:
ftp://141.211.234.112/GPLEGS.zip
Good Luck!
