F1RS - flipped my car!

F1RS - flipped my car!

Running Argentina last night (now that's a ***track if ever I've
raced one - I couldn't even get the one decent 5th gear bend right)
and coming out of that very corner, I ran into the back of someone and
my car back flipped! At least I think it was a back flip - I just
clipped the car and saw blue sky for a couple of seconds. I landed on
the air box, and with one of the rear wheels touching the tarmac, the
car slowly pirouetted around.

I'd like to know how hitting someone from behind can make a car flip -
I can't think of any was that could happen in real life.

I'd have put a replay of it on the web but I've been running with
replays disabled.

Oh, and why is no-one talking about F1RS, swapping setups, and so on?
Are we all too busy playing?

Ive actually seen that happen once with Riccardo Patrese hitting Bergers
car from behind he got airborn and did an back flipp, pretty scary if you
asked me.
I guess you have to hit the rear tire to make this happen thats what Ricardo
did anyway.
Have you been to www.ubisoft.fr ?
There are some setups to be both up and downloaded pretty nice.

Oh yes, I remember an incident like that - wasn't it at Estoril and
when Berger braked to pit, Patrese (thought it was someone else?)
flipped and landed on the pit wall.

Thinking about it, the extra mass in the rear of the car may cause the
flipping once the car started pointing upwards at a sufficient angle?

I'll have a go there and see what's what. At the moment I've not got
further than tweaking wing angle, as I've only run the first three
tracks in the season, two of them are brand new to me, and Brazil was
always a track I could never do well in with GP 1 & 2.

Hehe, sounds fun

If you remember in 93 at the end of the Italian GP one of the cars (was
it Christian Fittipaldi)rode up the car in front (Comas?????) and
completley back flipped and basically slid across the line - I believe he
was credited with his place

Also Brundle did a half back flip in Melbourne last year

I'm afraid I haven't found too much time to play the game yet, but from
what I have seen - I like it - except I wish the steering was a tad more
sensitive (when using wheel - although I still have to play with the
settings)

Anyway - please correct above statement if wrong

I can't remember who it was but I recall someone running up the rear of
another car on the front straight and doing a full 360 degree flip

Fittipaldi hit a rear wheel with one of his front wheels at a very
high speed (it was the front straight at Monza...), his car caught
air and did a full flip before landing on its wheels. He was definitely
lucky on that one.
Gilles Villeneuve wasn't so lucky on a similar accident (again, wheel
to wheel contact).

So, yes, it's possible to flip after hitting the car in front, but you
must hit one of the rear wheels of the car preceding you.

:
Like the other response indicated (Patrese and Berger) if you
hit the back wheel of the car ahead of you with the front of
yours, up you go!  Think of the direction that the two wheels
are turning relative to each other.  The net friction force
acts vertically upwards on your front wheel.  For a more
dramatic example, try to find the MPEG of C. Fitipaldi
running his Minardi into the back of teammate Farbazza's
car just before the finish of the '93 Italian GP.  Up and
OVER he went.  A hairy 360 degree back flip, landing
right side up on the track, minus one wheel I think, and
then sliding across the S/F line to be officially classified.
See also Katayama barrel rolling over the top of Lamy
in Portgal (?) 1994, or Brundle taking a flyer over Coulthard
in Melbourne, 1996.

This is one thing I enjoyed about GP2.  I nearly jumped out
of my skin the first time it happened to me.  Sounds like
F1RS does it even better, but without the opportunity to
add 3dfx to mypentium notebook, I will never know :(

Be careful out there...

Luckily he didn't quite flip and came down on the wheels. Also Christian
Fittipladi managed to do the same trying to pass his teammate (!) in a
sprint for the line in the last lap at Monza same year.

Thankfully I don't think a F1 car has actually flipped in such a manner
for many years. It could happen though :(

I know that crashes can seem great when driving a sim, but it is worth
remembering just what happens in real life. In October of this year,
Takashi Yokoyama was killed in a Japenese F3 race when he hit the rear
wheel of the car in front. His car was launched into the air and hit an
overhead gantry, over 5 metres above the track. The force of the impact
was so great that debris was found 500m from the scene. Don't forget.

Cheers,
Richard

De Cesaris did that once in a Ligier, was very scared back then..
Gilles Villeneuve had the same, he was less lucky to get scared

But in GP-2, you land NOSE-down. Now THAT is unrealistic.

And you don't need to hit a rearwheel to get a flip.

I can flip my car by running into the barrier on the length-axis or make a
head roll, no problem.

Also, doesn't anyone remember Damon Hill in 1994 on Estoril during training
or qualifying?

Irvine had spun and was rolling slowly back onto the track, Hill couldn't
avoid him and flipped over.

It was_definitely_ Patrese in the Williams, and he just _missed_ the pit wall.
It went almost unnoticed, but it could have been one of the most serious
accidents in F1... Just imagine that he landed on the wrong side of the pit
wall.....

Makes me recall Michael Andretti's accident at Interlagos (1993?): a 250+ km/h
crash into the tirewalls at the end of the main straight. Another one of those
accidents that don't get the attention they deserve.

Christian Fittipaldi in a Minardi. Actually, it is even more amazing: he
FINISHED THE RACE upside down!!! It was on the last lap and he crossed the line
at the moment of the 360! There must be an avi of this event somewhere on the
net. I remember seeing it announced in the F1-group.

Close but no cigarette...  the place was Monza, and the flip occurred at
the
beginning of the main straight.  The finish line is roughly halfway the
main
straight, and by the time he crossed it he no longer was in the air.

He did, however, finish the race with unusually small number of wheels
still
in place (he had only two wheels left after the flip, if memory serves,
as
his car slid to a standstill just past the finish line).
