N2 Help, Please

by Gary Merk » Mon, 17 Nov 1997 04:00:00

Before I could enjoy any of the new W95 driving sims, I had to resolve a
conflict between my joystick port (on my soundcard) and the soundcard
itself.  After deleting my soundcard drivers and reloading them, the
conflict was resolved and W95 now recognizes my wheel :).

However, I inadvertently created a new problem.  I had been running N2
w/o any problems by using a shortcut and shutting down and restarting in
DOS mode.  After reinstalling the drivers, I try to use my same shortcut
to run N2 and after the computer has shutdown and restarted in DOS, the
game goes thru a driver initialization phase.  During this phase, when
it gets to the soundcard driver I get a "config file is incomplete"
"DMADC" message.  The sim will go ahead and run, but I have no sound or
joystick support :(.

I have in the interim been running N2 in a "DOS Window", but I am tired
of the intermitent pauses and crappy framerate.  I think this is a
simple thing to fix, but I have tried everything I know and I cant get
it to work.  My system is a Gateway P166, Matrox Mil, and Soundscape
soundcard.  Can somebody out there please help me out?

Somehow, it seems that you are no longer loading your soundcard drivers
in DOS.  Maybe when you deleted your soundcard drivers you removed the
DOS drivers as well.  If you only reinstalled them via Win95, they may
not have been reinstalled for DOS.

Look in your Windows directory for the file "Exit To Dos.pif".  Check
the Properties -> Program -> Advanced:

Is specifiy a new MS-DOS configuration button filled in?  It should be
in order to load your DOS soundcard drivers.  Then you will need to make
sure that the configs.sys and autoexec.bat boxes have the needed lines
in them to load and setup your driver.  If you don't know what to add
check your soundcard manual.
