Hello all.  I just recently got GPL and was wondering if a 1:32.99 is a decent
time in race trim at Monza for a beginner?

Yes :-)

still not below 1:30 after 2.5 years

I shouldn't worry too much about times at this stage - try rating
yourself by "number of crashes per lap"... :-)

(Incidentally, I assume you've turned all the driver aids off - if not,
do it now, or you'll have to learn all over again later.)

Yup, all aids are off.  Is it possible with a good setup to take that first
slow, sweeping right hander flat out?  I always have to dip down to 4th and
feather the gas.

If you are talking about the Curva Grande then no, you will have to slow
down a bit.  Watch the Monza replay that comes with the game to see what
typical speeds are through there.  BTW if you can run 1:32's in the
Ferrari in race trim, you should be able to get down into the 1:30's or
so with the Eagle and a good qualifying (hotlap) setup.  Try it.

How does the Eagle handle compared to the Ferrari?  I'm now down to 1:31.27
during a race and am pretty comfortable with the car.

The Eagle has a higher polar moment of inertia than the Ferrari, which
means it is more difficult to get it to turn it, and more difficult to
get it to straighten out once it starts turning.  However it will reach
higher speeds on the straights than the Ferrari and you can make up some
time there.  Since you apparently have some experience in larger cars it
may not even be a problem.  Monza is a relatively high speed track, and
that is what the Eagle is good at.  Put it this way, unless you are
reaching around 193 mph or better in the Ferrari at the end of the two
straights, you will probably be faster in the Eagle.  If you don't like
the low speed handling of the Eagle, then go for the Lotus.  But either
one is faster at Monza than the Ferrari, which has a limited top speed
due to high drag.

No, you're doing it right. When you get really comfortable with the
car, you'll notice it *just* going light on the corner, and you can use
the little slide to keep a bit of speed. It works better in the Lotus,
though, because that's the fastest car.

Thanks for advice guys.  Now in the Eagle and a little tweaking to the default
setup, I'm down to a 1:29.73 in race trim

A very good time for a beginner! But what is your definition of "race trim"?

That's it, I'm not talking to you any more! <sulk>

:-)

I've been trying Monza over the last few days, and found a little
time over my first efforts by reverting to the Eagle (rather than
Lotus) plus my saved 'best laptime' setup, but mid 1:30s are still
all I could manage :-(

Still, I've run the 'Ring under 8:30 :-P

Yah, fuel was lowered.  I thought having a full tank for an 11 lap race was a
bit too conservative.=)
