Choosing a force feedback wheel...

I bought PC *** World in the UK today - primarily for the DVD on
the cover with tons of game patches in, but inside the magazine they
have a group test of force feedback wheel and pedal sets...

I was a little shocked to discover that the Logitech came last!

Out in the lead was the Guillemot R100 (the one with the ferrari
badge), and second was the Microsoft Force Feedback wheel, with
Logitech a distant third.

Has anybody got one of these Guillemot wheels?

What's it like?

Yep great wheel pedals are a little soft but have good range. precise
steering and good paddles for GP3. good ff effects. I would say the Logitech
is much better than the m$ ff wheel. it is smooth, but pedals are crap.

That is one of the issues most dependant on personal taste.
I have had both the ferrari-wheel and now have the logitech, and i must say
I like the Logitech the most. Besides the wheel-paddles braking on me twice
in a month, i found that the pedals need the foot to be far to upright in
games, where you just can't floor at at all times. (like GPL or MGPS). My
foot is by the way a normal size 8 1/2 I think in UK size. The I found had
not hte sam precission as the logitech, which showed up in faster laptime
because I am now able to drive without adjusting my line (personal taste
again maybe?) and you have a greater range in the power of the forcce
feedback. You simply get more punch if you wan't it. The pedals though are
small but as you can guess I like that since I enjoy the small and relative
precise travelling of these. Not saying that it couldn't be better though.
The bottom line is that it is a personal matter, so if you are out to buy
one, you should really get the demonstrated at the shop.

I'm inclined to get the MS wheel because they are built like tanks.

get the act labs, it's coming first in any SERIOUS reviews of wheels.

I know it sounds very affirmatibe like that, but I've played with the MS and
the logitech, I've held the guillemot but not played with it, no offense to
the guys owning these wheels but compared to the act labs they just FEEL
like cheap, light plastic things, then again maybe someone will drive faster
with the logitech or guillemot but the act labs is really felling like a
REAL wheel when you hold it.

My advice is : go to a BIG shop that has them all and try, you might have
trouble findinf the act labs but don't give up hope.

On top of that the service is FANTASTIC, I broke a part in it 2 weeks ago,
of course there was a way to fix it "temporarily" (thx gtx_slot) so i could
still play with it, I mailed act labs to tell them about this, and like "can
I open it to try and fix it ?", 1 day later "yes you can open it, and I send
oyu the missing part by mail today, no cost whatsoever..... WHO can beat
that ?

My MSFF is starting to fall apart after 1.5 years of (ab)use, so in a
few months I think I have to start to think about a new wheel. How
does the ACT Labs clamp to the table? My computer table is a little
stupid since there is this vertical plank under it, about 5 cm from
the edge. It makes my MSFF not clamp properly and in the beginning I
had to concentrate not push the wheel up and down when racing. Other
people who try my wheel almost immediately tear it off the table :)

And do the pedals even come close to the MSFF ? :)

Well that could be a problem because the act labs has 2 metal parts coming
under and I don't think that a 5cm edge can be used.

The pedals of the act labs at at the start quite good, and if you modify
them a little they are just fantastic.

Anyway go to www.slottweak.com to check everything (including modifications)
for this wheel.

get one, you will wonder how you could play with a MS for all this time

do other people think that Logitech clamps should work pretty well with his
5 cm plank? should reach right around it? I would think that since a lot of
these wheels are pretty close, making sure it doesn't fall off your desk
should be your #1 concern.

He also might try velcroing the wheel to the desk in addition to the clamps
to it'll stay better.

The Act Labs pedals take a lot of breaking in, and after about a month, are
quite good, but I preferred the MS pedals, they have just the right amount
of resistance, plenty of travel, and are mounted at the right angle. Just a
shame about the MS wheel itself, which couldve done with being more robust.
Ideally, I'd have the Act Labs wheel with MS pedals, but I don't think it
can be done.

uncounted electrons thus:

The main problem with the ACT Labs wheel is the cost - they want
an extra 70 US dollars to ship it to the UK. This despite the
fact that the European warehouse is only over in Holland...  :(

Let us all know if you find somewhere in the UK that has any sort
of choice! And that has any at all set up for test driving by
potential customers.

There's a very comprehensive review of the ACT, Logitech & MS
wheels on the anandtech website (www.anandtech.com).

Ummm. I think you're most probably right about that!

I'm probably going the Logitech route - Simply Computers
(www.simply.co.uk) have it for around 88. And as my mouse &
(non-FF) joystick are Logitech devices I'd hope for a much
smaller chance of software conflicts. Plus if there's a serious
problem (i.e. something for which I'd have to return the thing)
it'll be easier to deal with if it's been purchased in the UK...
