What is a good target frame rate for Nascar 4?  I am playing with all the
settings and am not sure at what point to decrees the graphics.
1 GHz over clocked to 1250 GHz
NVIDIA GeForce2 GTS/Pro
256 megs PC150 memory
I am running at 28 - 34 FPS with 800x600 32 bit with
car detail set to med
world detail set to 75%
and RVM set to med.
3d sound on (not to sure of the performance hit)

Your thoughts.... Thanks Ron

Oh I love this game....

You should always aim for 30fps at any moment, which means in the tough
situations where many cars are in the frame view.  I would suggest you work
with the view slides in your mirror (it's not really important to have it at
100%) and also the world detail slider.

I have a 1 Gig Athlon T-bird not OCed, V5 AGP,  I think my detail slider
is at 50% but may be at 100%, I'll have to check.  Any case, I'm getting
60fps after doing a lot of tweaking.  The biggest frame rate hit I had was
from the steering wheel and the mirror details.  Turn them down or off and
see what you get.

With the steering wheel on, and before tweaking I was getting something
like 40ish and the steering seemed to be delayed some.   after doing a bunch
of adjustments and increasing the frame rate the steering wasn't as delayed.
at 60, and without the wheel it feels almost perfect.  Although I had it CPU
OCed once before and got something like 140 or 177 fps and everything was
absolutely fluid.  So, going with this experience you want 5K fps but my
current 60 should be what you should shoot for.  if you find a way to get
that 5K let me know ;-)

Change your settings to 16 bit color and your frame rates will soar.

I think anything over 30 is really fine.

What you should be trying to do is eliminate the huge swings in fps..
getting 45 one turn and then 22fps the next can cause inconsistant driving.
I know Papy has unlocked the framerate from the rest of the physics, but
I'm not sure what effect a given frame rate # has on control.  I would try
and get a number above 30 or 36 that is consistant.
ps...you have a pretty stout system, but your numbers, seem
barely above average.(they ARE above just not as much as I would have
expected)  I may have to rethink my next purchase..

Unless you have a Radeon card.

Radeon's need to be run in 32-bit.

ATI's drivers, frankly, really suck at 16 bit color.  All the effort has
been put into 32 bit performance.

Which is not really a bad thing :)

Your frame rates seem low for that much PC.  My P3 800 with first generation
Ge Force is getting 50-70 FSP with all details on high at 1024X768X16 in
Open GL.

Are you running N4 in direct X or Open GL?  Papy recommends Open GL for the
Ge Force cards.  **MAKE SURE** you turn off "v-sync" in your display
properties, Open GL settings.  If v-sync is "on" your frame rates in N4 will
be cut in 1/2.

To answer your question... you should always have at least 30 FPS.  That's
with several cars drawn in front and behind you.  If you can maintain at
least 30FPS with several cars drawn, then you won't see any stuttering.

Thanks everyone for the information!  God I love news groups.  Paul what is
your Winmark score?  If you do not know what I am talking about please check
out www.madonion.com.  Your PC is screaming for the hardware and I am
curious what you score will be.

Thanks
Ron

Problem is that's a site that wants all your information and *then* a payment to

Er.....  No?

3DMark2000 is a relatively well-known benchmarking utility that you
can download and run yourself.  Sure you can post your info if you
want and you can pay them for their 'Pro' version if you want, but
both are optional.  The benchmark program is freely available...
