WingMan Formula - Worth getting ?

by Jorgen Christens » Sun, 16 May 1999 04:00:00

Just wanna get a cheap wheel for my racing games and i saw that the
Wingman Formula should be ok at a low price. Gonna use it mainly for
f1 racing games.

Thought about getting a force feedback version but they are so much
more expensive and i've got a feeling that they are both noisy (with
the fan) and break easily (am i wrong?)

But to sum up, is topic a good wheel or can i do better in the same
price range ?

Nope the force feedback version is NOT noisy at all.  And its very solidly
constructed so I don't think you will have cause to break it unless you toss
it around the room. :)

I bought a Wingman Formula Force about a month ago and exchanged it just 2
days later because the pedals were so bad for GPL.

In exchange, I got a Wingman Formula and CH pedals (not the pro pedals).  I
plugged the Wingman wheel into the Wingman base and the Wingman base into
the CH pedals.

It worked instantly with no fuss.  I was turning laps at Silverstone within
2 tenths of my personal best after just 2 hrs. of playing.  Needless to say,
I am VERY happy with this combo and it's still cheaper than the Formula
Force!

I've got a wingman formula and am perfectly happy with it.  I ONLY use it to
play GPL - i didn't even bother wasting hd space on F1RS & Motorhead.  Steve
Blank(something) posts here regularly and has some excellent revisions
listed on Alison Hines webpage - which I'd recommend doing for GPL.
(They're pretty straitforward: better spring for the pedals, tightening the
spring for the wheel, & increasing the turning radius.)

I'd had a Wingman Formula Force but it developed a tremendous "squeek" after
about 2 weeks - and Tom from Logitech who posts at force-1 told me there was
nothing to do about it. That said, many others have the formula force wheel
& have had no problems.  Personally, I love my wingman formula...and the
price was right!

Happy racing.

WingMan Formula - Worth getting ?

I brought a Wingman Formula two weeks back. It's great, very well built and
the wheel feels superb. The pedals are slightly dissapointing, it's got a
nice base but the pedals don't travel as much as I would like.

Installation was very simple, there is no USB option on the this wheel, just
gameport. The software is great, drivers work very well, especially if you
download the latest beta of the wingman software.

Buttons are great, 4 on the wheel and two excellent 'F1 Style' shifters. The
shifters are well placed and have a nice feel. Again, the paddles are well
built, nice and big, not small like some other wheels.

On the wheel there are 2 LED's, one confirms power to the device, the other
tells you if the wheel is communicating with the device driver. I have no
problem with the green LED's, but it would distract some people, but you can
easily put some tape over them.

Finally the game bundle is F1RS and Motorhead. I've not tried Motorhead yet,
but F1RS is ok (if you like it). I don't like Ubisoft's style.

I'd give the wheel 8/10. There are only 2 *really* good wheels out there, I
think : This wheel and the Act-Labs range. I was going to buy an Act-Labs
but there are so few suppliers of it in Europe I gave up searching and
brought my Wingman instead.

HTH (sorry it dragged on ;-)

Apart from the "squeek", how did you feel about the performance of the
wheel in terms of the quality and strength of the forces? Did you find
it helpful in GPL?

thanks!

It certainly should help. I found the wheel to be *WAY* more precise
than my old T2...
