How many times have you started a race, only to discover you're still on
your qualifying setup, and only have enough fuel for 2 laps!!?

I also have the problem that very occasionally I get into the car to find
that my MSFF (gameport) isn't working. I think this is more to do with the
OS than the game, though.

Well, here's the tip you need...

If the race has already started, hit <control y> to put yourself back onto
the grid. Then, before the red light go out, press <Escape>. This puts you
back in the pits, where you can change your setup, and restart the race.

If your controller doesn't work, select the controllers option, then select
the force feedback option, then re-enter the race. This always seems to turn
my controller on, and All Is Well (TM).

In F1 2002 under Windows XP, I was also able to get the wheel settings
working by pausing the game, then alt-tabbing to the desktop and back
again.

That's 9.0, not 9.0a.
