Sounds like your friend does not have the joystick port on the sound
card enabled. There is usually a jumper that must be removed to do
this. You'll need to consult the documentation for the card to find
out.
If it's an older card, chances are it may not accept a dual input
devise like the T1 either.

My game card is really a game/sound card (I know, I know) but the manual says
it is a dual port card (which is what I need for NFS).
Works for NASCAR, doesn't for anything requiring adapter (assuming I didn't
hook it in wrong.)
Thanks for the advice and I'll pass along if I get it to work. My worst
thought (not too bad actually) is that I may have to get a dedicated game card.
Oh well.

I leave the adapter on all the time.
Also, I purchased a joystick switchbox from Cables America (Computer shopper)
and installed my Gravis joystick on one port and the wheel on the other.
Just a flick of the switch and I'm racing or running doom.
