ISA -> USB modem performance with sims

by Mike Buckle » Fri, 24 Sep 1999 04:00:00

I've just seen a USB modem advertised for 39ukp and I'm sorely tempted
to replace my ISA modem with this. Has anybody done this already? If so
is there a noticeable performance increase (GPL?) bearing in mind the
lightened load on the CPU?
It's only going to be a stop gap for about 8 months or so until cable
modems come to my area anyway.

Mike I would wait for a cable modem... Mine is usb with a 256kb/sec
upload and 526kb/sec download on a good connection. These figures
will vary on downloading sites but for a good connect in Vroc its A#1.
Good luck Thom_j.

haven't tried it myself, but on alison's page she stated that one should
definately go for a USB-modem. quote:

"By far the best analog modem solution for GPL is a
Universal Serial Bus modem rather than a conventional
serial port modem. An alternative is an external serial
port modem connected through a USB to Serial Converter."

check it (and the rest ;-) ) for yourselft in her GPL-online-FAQ at

I made the switch to a USB modem about 3 months ago, it made a noticeable
improvement in my connection to VROC.

If your ISA is a decent quality one, I'd stick with that until cable
is available.
I replaced a Diamond Supra Express serial modem with a Zoom ISA
internal. The Zoom exceeds the performance of the Diamond in every
aspect.
I don't think the fact that it's ISA is as relevant as the quality of
your connection.
