AGP Card suggestions....

by Craig March » Fri, 19 Dec 1997 04:00:00

I just upgraded my P5-200 to a Pentium II 266, I currently still have a
Matrox Millenium PCI and Diamond Monster PCI card. I want to know what the
best AGP card I can get that has 3DFX chipset. Is there one? Thanks,

To my knowledge, the first 3dfx based cards that will support AGP will
be the Voodoo-2 chipset which isn't due out until March time frame.  And
then it will only be AGP 1x ... we won't see 2x until late this year and
4x cards probably not till '99 ...

I have pretty much decided I'm not going to get a 1x card until the word
is out about what the 2x ones will be like.

Good luck!

AGP cards right now have no significant advantage over PCI cards.  There are no
AGP 3Dfx cards right now, you'll have to wait till Voodoo2.  Then you have to
wait for games that support AGP cards or else you'll see little or no
improvement in non AGP games.  AGP cards will not necessarily be necessary for
large texture memory games.  One company that I can't remember right now will
be building a 12 Mb Voodoo2 PCI cards which will probably be faster than any
Voodoo2 AGP card running games with large textures and I doubt that any game in
the next year or two will use all of the 12 Mb available on that card.  I think
the company was California something.  For more info on AGP cards and Voodoo 2
cards check out Tom's Hardware page and Operation 3Dfx homepage.

AGP is still in its infancy - in fact if my new PII-300 didn't come with a
Velocity 128 I wouldn't even have one.  Right now only G-Police and Motoracer
support AGP (I'm sure there are others but those are the 2 big ones.    I've
done a side-by-side comparison between my Monster and the Velocity and the
Velocity stomps all over the 3DFX on those 2 games.  You can run at resolutions
the current 3Dfx cards could never support (up to 1024x768) and in the case of
G-Police - I am getting 4x the texture information.   For 98% of my other games
- I have to resort to my Monster 3D (not a bad thing - it still kicks ass).

AGP will really shine next year when Voodoo 2 hits the stores...
