That's not a GPL bug, that's a 3DFX bug typical of Voodoo and Voodoo2.
Anytime you run a game on your 3DFX card in a higher resolution than your
Windows desktop, your mouse can't reach all parts of the screen. For
example, I run at 800*600 in Windows, thus my mouse can only cover an
800*600 area while playing games at higher resolutions.

I haven't noticed this happening with any other games at this
resolution...

Fixed.

Fixed.

You can change this now, if you want.  Use Notepad to create a file
named core.ini in the same directory as gpl.exe, and place the
following two lines in it.

[ Communications ]
disable_network = 1

You can also use Notepad to edit app.ini in GPL's home directory to
tell GPL to not look for your serial ports.  Change the line that reads

disableDirectConnect = 0

to

disableDirectConnect = 1

GPL 1.1 will also allow you to tell it to not look for modems by
setting disable_modem = 1 in the [Communications] section of core.ini
(this was missing from GPL 1.0).

That's not a bug, it's a feature.  Apparently software piracy is rather
a large problem outside of The States, so the International versions of
the game require you to have the CD in place to run anything but
multiplayer.

See Trips' reply.

Usually this is caused by an external modem that is not turned on, or
extraneous modems listed in the Win9x modem control panel.  GPL polls
the available modem(s) on startup, and in these cases it has to wait for
them to timeout before the main menu appears.  GPL 1.1's 'disable_modem
= 1' option will keep this from occurring.

I notice it on all my games that:

1. Run on the Voodoo card rather than the primary display card, and
2. Run at a higher resolution than my Windows desktop.

Ahh. Now that does make sense. They didn't do that with the Nascar and
Indycar games.

Most of todays games require the CD plus a hard disk install. I
assumed it was a bug in GPL, as you're asked where you want a full
install which doesn't require the CD or a minimal install. However,
they both require it.

Cheers, mate!

In those with a mouse driven interface that scales with game resolution
(like GPL's full-screen replay) it should be readily apparent.  Like
many games, the rest of the GPL interface is a static 640x480 so this
isn't an issue.  Do any of the other games you're tried actually have a
visible mouse cursor on the high-res screens?

Well Stu, there must be 2 Australias because I've been into the
multiplay since the sim was released. Not perfect, but plenty good
enough to totally negate any interest I had in offline racing.

    Not in my version!

Oh well, I must have a U.S. version!

Well, none of those effects appear in my version!
And even if the CD was needed to sit in the drive, that to me is not a
"bug".

This term ("bug") is used very loosely amongst the *** fraternity.  I
think that a lot of people do not really understand what is legitimately
classified as a "bug".

It holds no interest for me, Remco.

My lifestyle provides little time for scheduled "internet" activities. When
I want/need to unwind I can do so simply by firing up the best racing
simulation and blasting around (for example) the 'Ring for a while in
company with 19 pretty good AI drivers :o)

That's fine, however, 92% of any of the racing done on-line via VROC/GPL
is not "scheduled".  Just about all you have to do is show up and wait
a few moments and you will have the opportunity to race.
